DIY: type R, Mugen Si Snug shiftboot installation

Ok, so i didnt like the ring adapter for the type r knob, and i dont like the way the lock nut looks under the shift knob. Heres a quick fix to make the boot stay flush with the knob, this will also lower the knob a bit and give the shortshifter appearance.

******This can also be done with the stock shift Knob******

First, start by removing the knob and lock nut. then pull up here on both sides of the base, it pops up pretty easy.

Next, stagger two zipties on top of each other below the threads. Position them so that the plastic piece inside the top of the shift boot sits just below the threads.

Now, do a test fit with the shift boot plastic ring, it should rest on the zipties, this will prevent it from moving down, the key is to postion the zipties so that when the knob is on, it will sit flush with the top of the boot and wont move around.

Finally, screw on your type R or Mugen Si shift knob, without the locknut, it should stop at the end of the threads and the numbers 1-6 should have a perfect north and south position. voila! now you have the appearance of a shortshifter, with a nice clean shiftboot to knob interface!

Yup it is very nice for a stock shifter, but I don't like the shape of it.

Looks good. I would def use this idea if I ever change my shift knob......again.

Oh, and on the "appearence of a short shifter" comment... well it makes the shifter look shorter, in height. When you have a short shifter though, it shortens the throw between gears, not your height of the shifter itself.

yeah, i know but i dont want the short shifter, i think shortening the throw for someone like me would just cause damage cuz i shift so hard sometimes! i just like the appearance, i think twm is the only short shifter with the option of using the knob to make it lower in appearance, correct me if im wrong, thats the look i was going for, thats all!

And technically, making the knob sit lower would be less taxing on the throw from a mathematical "lever" perspective. I think this diy really makes it sooooooo much more clean in appearance.

Not for all for shifters though. Some lower the height by a fair margin.

I'd did basically the same thing, but I used a small rubber grommet under the boot to hold it up and another rubber grommet on top of the boot ring. The one on top of the boot rings acts like the stock lock nut and helps to line up the numbers correctly.

You can just barely see it under the knob.

yeah, you have to adjust the ziptie so that it sits just below the threads or it will interfere with the way the knob sits, if there is nothing stopping the knob from tightening down all the way then it should sit with the numbers north and south perfectly.

I think the zip tie method looks better then the gromet method.
