I have a few spots that needed some paint so I got a bottle from the Honda dealership locally. I got home and painted the spots. I noticed the color didn't match, but figured the paint would change a little while it dried. (My only other experience with paint has been latex based paint you'd paint your walls with, so this made perfect sense to me.) Well, I was wrong. No color change at all and it's been a couple of days. I have a galaxy grey car but the touch-up paint looks more like the silver than the grey. Hell I can see the big spot (about 1/8x1/4 inch chip from a farily big rock) from 35 feet away pretty clearly. Is it just me, or shouldn't the touch-up be pretty darn close the factory color? I know a different batch of paint will have a slightly different color, and that nobody is perfect so I'm not expecting an undetectable difference. I do expect the touch-up to not be the first thing you notice when walking past the car though.
At first, I thought it was just me, so I drove to my parents for a visit, and cause they still cook when I go to visit and I won't object to a free home-cooked meal. First thing my Dad says when we walk outside is "What'd you do to your hood?" I hadn't told him anything about the touch-ups so I know they're pretty obvious by that question. Does anyone know where I can get an ounce or two of paint that will actually match the factory color since Honda can't seem to match it? |

I got my 2oz bottle over the weekend from Expresspaint.com. It's an impressive match. Using a very fine model brush I was able to just dab the rock chips to match the color, then I'll go back this weekend and dab some clear coat the same way, the chips should be barely visible.

Shook the can as the instructions say. It's just the wrong color. How foolish of me to assume the dealer would know what color matched my car. Live and learn I guess. I have a few ounces being shipped to me now from Car Touch up Paint,Spray Paint Cans. Automotive Paint by ExpressPaint.. I'll just go to aftermarket shops or online for anything dealing with the car in the future.
While I'm thinking about it, does anyone know if having an extra coat or two of clear coat put on the car will stop the paint from chipping every time a bug looks at it? |
