Review: Dupli Color DIY Red Caliper Paint
So a few months ago i picked up some red caliper paint from autozone for only 30bucks. I figured it would be a nice weekend project for me.
The kit itself really suprised me with everything it came with for only 30dollars. You get a can of brake cleaner, a toohbrush, sand paper, a small paint brush, roll of tape and can of red paint. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. However it took me alot longer than i thought it would, a good 7-8 hours to be exact. Plus i only had one jack so i had to do one cailper at a time wich just added to the time consuming process. After removing each wheel i would spray on there brake cleaner a begin to clean with the toohbrush. Then i went over the caliper with the sand paper just to spray it again with the cleaner and go over it again with the toohbush, wiped off with a cloth and let dry for a few minutes. I then took the rool of tape that came in the box and began to mask off everything i did not want to get paint on. I did not want to take the caliper off the rotor so this step was a fairly detailed process. After it was all taped up i put on my first coat of paint on the caliper. I would let it dry for an hour then come back and put on another coat. I would let it dry for about 20min and the put the wheel back on and move over to the next wheel and start the process all over again. **Just note that it is recomended that you do not drive your car for 24hours after painting so the paint has time to cure. After all was said and done i was very happy with the result. Obviously the results you get are gonna be determined by how much of a steady hand and patience you have. However i am not what i would consider a painter of anykind but i just took my time and it looks really good. But i cant stress enough that you have the patience to do it and do it well. The can of paint still has a little more than half left so there is plenty for use on other applications. It is a very heat retardent paint so it can be used on a variety of creative locations if one were so inclined. There was also plenty of caliper cleaner remaining as well and have sinced used it on some other vehicles just as a final touch to a detailing. ![]() ![]() Now that i have had them painted for about 6 months i can attest to the wear of the paint. In the 6 months time there has been no fading, i have pictures from now and when i just painted them. Not to say that in a year it will not have faded but i just know that after 6 it still looks vivid. The picture above is from today, not immedialty after painting. The only problem that has arrose in that time is there are a few small chips on some of them from rocks hitting them, harldy noticable, plus there is still all that paint left over so plenty to do some touchups. I prob will not even have to remove the tire again to do the minor touches that are needed. I think when/if they finnaly fade and can not be touched up easily i will just purchase a new brake kit with calipers that are already colored. But comparing the 30bucks for the paint vs the amount a brake and caliper kit would cost, i feel pretty good with the superb results i got from the paint. |

I have the same stuff. I've had mine painted for about a year now or so and I'm about to have to do some touchups. This will be the second time to do them. That's the only downfall, but I think it's due to rocks and such.
