Rear tow hook?

I'm not sure what the purpose of or what the name of the piece I'm referring to is, but its presence aggravates the $h1t out of me! Does anyone know how to remove it? I’m talking about the hook on the lower rear center of the vehicle. Is it necessary? Can it come off easily?

I don't like the way it looks because it breaks the smooth flow of the rearend. Everything is round and sleek and then there's this out-of-place metal hook hanging down like a little penis. I guess i could just hang a pair of these on there:

keep your tow hooks, they'll come in handy when your car needs to be... oh right. towed.

but seriously, i've seen cars that go off course at autocross and had to be towed due to damage etc. I don't know if you do any autocross or track, but even on the street, it serves a purpose if you should ever get into an accident.
