correct way to paint valve cover so it doesnt look cheap

i painted my valve cover last year and i want to remove the paint thats on it now cuz its chipn and doesnt look good anymore...i want to remove the paint and re-paint the valve cover but in a way that will last and look nice...any help would be great.

washed it, covered holes with paper towels and tape...painted it with blue engine enamel...i didnt prime it cuz someone told me i didnt need to...like a da i listened and didnt prime it...lol...but that was it.

i sanded, washed, sanded, washed, primer coats, then paint coats.

i sanded my engine cover lightly with 300-400 grit then painted it. the sanding helps the next batch of paint connect. mine turned out good. i would think its the same idea with the valve cover.

he's talking about the valve cover not the IM cover.

i roughed mine up with some sand paper. wiped it all off then did about 5 coats of engine paint

Yeah i worked a few levels of sand paper.

I did two coats of primer and if memory serves right, I did 3 coats of my red paint.

came out like so..

You don't have to use primer with engine enamel but you must sand it down to a metal surface cause that is what the enamel bonds too

With engine enamel there's no need for primer as its ceramic based, but you do need to wash really well with degreaser, then sand it with 500+ grit sandpaper so that the paint sticks on. Then wash it again after sanding with soap. Then paint, light coat, light coat, medium coat, light coat. and you should be good to go

baically how i did my camo job.... well, my friend painted it for me, cause i suck at painting, lol...

damn that black and blue looks sick as hell.

i just sanded mine with 350, then 800 then washed it and sanded with 800 again. i baked mine and no chipping so far.
