Heat shield?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post about this but just had a quick question.... Not even sure if its called a heat shield or not, but i think its to dampen a fire just in case it happens in the engine bay. But what i'm trying to get at is, is it to dampen and put out a fire in the engine bay, or does it reduce heat. I want to take it off but will the drastic change in temperature on the hood do anything to the clear coat or paint? Sorry for the poorly worded paragraph... lol

It is to reduce heat being drawn into your engine by your air filter.

not a bad thing per say. The area around the heat shield would be quite a bit hotter...

IE the heat sheild under our car where our exhaust is would make the inside of our car a few degrees warmer.

yes its to dampen a fire. why would you want to remove it for? i doubt it will have much effect on the paint.

OP, are you talking about the hood insulation attached to the underside of the hood? That is generally put there for sound dampening. Most luxury cars have it to keep things quieter. Asbestos has been used at times as a fire retardant as well as reducing the amount of heat on the hood. I have a Toyota Corolla and it never came with underhood insulation. The paint on the hood is fine. I don't see any reason to remove it. It won't hurt either, but I would just leave it as is.

[Lovecheese], he's talking about the mat on the bottom of the hood.

It's called a hood liner and yeah, you can take it off. It's insulation for the engine, keep it warm in cold climate, and keep it cool in hot weather (useless IMO).

Hoodliners are used primarily for soundproofing. As I said earlier, more expensive cars have them and they can be quite thick at times. They also can serve as a fire retardant [not so important on a fuel injected motor, but definitely important with a carburetor]. Lastly, they can provide a degree of thermal insulation, which can benefit the paint on the hood. I am not sure how effective they are at keeping an engine warm in the winter. Here in Minnesota with sub zero temps, you need more than a hoodliner to keep an engine warm. As for keeping an engine cool, I think it has just the opposite effect. Back in the day, guys used to remove it because underhood temps were higher, which was bad for the intake. More hot air ingested=less power.
