Stickers VERSUS Decals

So here's the question. What is tastefully defined as a "Decal" versus a non-necessary "Sticker"??

I have some people saying that DECALS are a representation of something. But IMO, so are STICKERS.

IMO, Stickers have the potential to detract from the overall goal'd look of the car.

IMO, Decals have the potential to enhance the overall goal'd look of the car thru personal expression, or SPONSORSHIP.

What are your definitions and opinions on the differences, needs, and looks of them both...

stick·er (stĭk'ər) Pronunciation Key
n.
One that sticks, as a gummed or adhesive label or patch.
A tenacious, diligent, or persistent person.
A thorn, prickle, or barb.
Something puzzling or bewildering, as a riddle.

de·cal (dē'kāl', dĭ-kāl') Pronunciation Key
n.
A picture or design transferred by decalcomania.
A decorative sticker.

The word "decals" has an air of professionalism.
Stickers are something you put on your 4th grade Trapper Keeper.

Maybe, a decal is something you apply with the use of water (ex vinyl) while the sticker has the sticky stuff and needs no water? I don't know, that's what I think it would be.

That's the way most sign shops see it. They get offended if you call it a sticker.

I really don't care what people call it. As long as they pay me after I make them one. LOL.

"I <3 Haterz" decal is just as lame as an "I <3 Haterz sticker"

Actually I don't think I've ever seen a single decal or sticker on a vehicle that I liked. Honestly, can you? No really, can you? Thought so! "You say classy, San Diego".

Even vinyls have adhesive on the backing, don't they? All the ones I've put on my car do. You can use a light application of water to keep the vinyl from sticking so you can move it around and adjust it prior to application, maybe that's what you meant?

You put stickers on your trapper-keeper.
You put decals on your RC car.
You put vinyl on the side of the house.

I don't understand the confusion.

i consider a decal to be an identifying object, such as the i-vtec dohc decals on the side of the Si, or any of the factory installed safety ones.

I consider a sticker anything that's not originally part of the car.

Most "decals" and "stickers" are made out of vinyl. Some are paper though.
