Shift Knob Questions

I know there are a lot of Shift Knob Threads but i couldn't find a thorough answer to this question:

So I have read on this forum and have heard that resting your hand on the shifter is bad. Im not sure why. My question is why are certain shifter's weighted if weight is bad? ie skunk2 which i am considering getting.

Second Question:
If i dont get the skunk2 i am thinking about getting an all leather shifter( my hand gets burned with these metal shift knobs). The V6 Accords come with a the same 6 speed tranny as the Si's but i cant find the part number or anyone who is selling the shifter. Does anyone have, or know anyone who has this shifter(picture at the bottom)?

a weighted shift knob is different from putting weight on the shifter with ur hand. the weighted shift knob applies weight on the shift so your hand can torque the shifter into gear with less effort. putting ur hand on the shifter is bad because for one its obviously bad to drive with one hand and two you never know when something might happen and your hand might force the shifter foward or backward by accident while your foot is off the clutch and that puts unnecessary pressure on the gears. the weighted shift knob isnt so heavy as to do that while the car is moving even when its in full break or acceleration.

actually, resting your hand on the shifter is bad because your constantly putting pressure on the linkage, and an excessively heavy knob does the same thing.

its not such a concern with cabled shifting as in our cars, but i still advise against it.

and the weight of your hand is much greater than the weight of any shift knob

well, common sense, bro. have your gear in 3rd and lean all your weight of your arm on the knob, see what happenes...it will probably grind your gear. its a safty warning. why do you need to wear a seatbelt? think about it.

hmm no offense but i cant decide if i really like how that looks. Is that ring at the bottom a part of the shift knob?

no, its part of the shift boot. i bought them both. later i transfered the ring into a boot made for the civics so it doesnt look as sloppy as it does in that pic.

ok cool gotcha. How heavy would 'excessively' heavy be then? i think the stock shift knobs are like 120 grams while the skunk2 is 440. How much does a hand weigh lol?

I've got a skunk2 and I really like it. the extra weight makes shifting gears smoother and it takes less effort. I also screwed the knob all the way down and it makes the throw shorter. Only thing that sucks is that now that its cold out the knob gets REALLY cold

yea i live in MD and its like hot summers and cold winters. atleast for the winter you can wear gloves. When its hot, its like getting your palm branded with the 1,2,3,4,5,6,R. Thats why i was looking into the leather shift knobs. but ive heard a lot of good stuff about the skunk2. Decisions, Decisions

That doesn't even make any sense

I've heard its bad because like someone else said it puts pressure on the linkage. Specifically though, I heard you'll bend your shift forks

you could just use a sock I'm from maryland too I've had to deal with a hot shifter before, but its not the top with the pattern, its the metal ring below that'll get you the most.

I know you are talking about getting a skunk2. However if you could entertain me for a moment I would appreciate it. I just recently bought (last week) a Monster Knob. It is a round knob (2inches in diameter). It is weighted however it is not overly heavy. It is made out of a resin. The same resin a pool ball is made out of. It is not supposed to get too hot or too cold. I am absolutely in love with it right now. It feels so good in your hand. I actually just sold my Mugen Si shift knob after I drove around with it on for a day. I would assume that is saying a lot since that Mugen knob is a very highly desired piece.

because of marketing and fan boy hype, not because it is functionally any better...

i'm sorry if that doesn't make any sense. i would love you to rest your arm on the knob while its in gear. i'm not talking about putting your hand on it, but putting your arm weight on the knob while its in gear. try it. and im sure itll do something else within the gearbox as well.

i had a monster knob. excellent knob. i stopped using it because our shift levers arent high enough for such a low knob.

the TL-S knob has been great to me, and in many weighs similar to the monsterknob. light, and doesnt change temperature.

exactly. you could buy a plain spherical knob for about $40 and have it custom engraved with WHATEVER you want, even a Mugen logo for about $40 more, and it would come out to less than the cost of the Mugen knob. not to mention the mugen knobs arent that heavy (good thing IMO) and 99% of the people here want a heavy knob, theyd actually be better off buying a heavy knob and having it engraved.
