Question Moonroof Visor and Tint question

Hey everyone

This is my first post here. :) I am getting a sedan in taffeta white sometime in Sept. This will be my first Honda, but of course I hear they last a long time. My sister had a CRX back in the day and she said the only thing she ever had to do was the regular maintainence.

For my first question...I have never had a moonroof on a car before. I added the moonroof visor but I am not so sure about it.

I have been searching around on this forum for other photos and I dont see very many at all that have the visor. So I was wondering if it is it really worth getting? Are there any disadvantages of having one? It seems like it would be a little harder to clean underneath one. Do they have a tendency to fade/crack over time?

I am also planning on having the windows tinted. Missouri is 35% but it seems pretty light. Is it possible to get 30%? I don't want to go too much below the legal limit. The dealer called me back today and told me they could have the car sent off and have it done for $249. Which some might say that is a high price, but I think you get what you pay for. I would be willing to pay the $249 if they can do an excellent job. I think I want to go and have it done myself though instead of having the dealership send it out....just to make sure I get what I want.

Is there a better tint to use? I've heard the Huper Optik is really nice but is it a lot more expensive? Is there any sort of tint brand I should stay away from?

Thanks!!

Melissa

First off, welcome to the site. Seems like you're pretty serious about the car, and you've got tons of questions. Hopefully you'll find all the answers right here.

The visor will cut down on some wind noise, and it helps keep elements out of the car (rain, etc.) if you want to have it slightly open. Other than preferences on looks, there are no real negatives. It should be easy to clean, but I'm not sure about fading/cracking. I personally don't have one myself.

I'm fairly certain tint is only offered in certain percentages. 35% being one of the more popular ones. There may be a shop that offers 30% tint, but you honestly won't see that much difference. 20% is the next logical step, but may prove too dark for your liking. It also sounds like your dealer is marking up the price. I have every window (including windshield) tinted in my sedan and it didn't cost that much. I also have the full lifetime warranty on all windows (including windshield).

You can definitely search the forum to find more user reviews of the visor and tint percentages.

First off, welcome to the site, hope you enjoy your stay here.

As for the M/R visor, can't really say since I've never had one or been in a car with one.

As for tint, 3M and Llumar(sp?) are supposed to be good films to use I believe. I got 3M on mine. I think if you shop around, you can find a better price than $249 for the tint as well. Never saw 30% tint before. I've only heard/seen 5%, 15%, 20%, 35%, but it should be possible. Not sure if there'd be too much of a difference though between 30% and 35%.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome and your response.

When I talked to the dealer today I told him that if he could give me the name of the place they are sending it I would appreciate it. He seemed put off by that and asked why that would make a difference LOL. It could make a difference for many reasons but I just told him that I may want to just go and have it done myself....so I am sure he marked it up.

Originally I was willing to pay $200 but I don't think I would want to pay anything over that amount. I know some people get it for $160 or so. I've searched a lot on here about the tint issue and the information I have found is a good starting point.

I got the sunroof visor and love it, I went about 5 months with out one and to be honest the only downfall I found is...If it rains alot the water tends to build up enough that when you go around a corner it dumps into your window. To solve the little issue i had with that i got the vent visors from weather tech. No more water in my ride.

there is a pic for reference to what it looks like on the car.

Thanks for the welcome! I just called the place that the dealer uses and they said they use suntek. Also by bypassing the dealer, the price is $170 lol so the dealer definitely marked it up by $80.

Welcome to 8th, Pixel. I see that most of the boys haven't yet discovered our newest female member yet. Otherwise this thread would have been at least 10 pages long before I even have a chance to look at it.

I don't see much advantage to the moonroof visor in all honesty. When you open up the moonroof, there's a little device in front that pops up to divert air over the open roof so it reduces wind and noise in the cabin. The moonroof visor clips that device in place since the visor effectively takes over that function.

As for it's functionality in the rain, sure it'll help keep rain out of the cabin, but I would advise against opening the moonroof in wet weather conditions in the first place. If you get water into the moonroof mechanism tracks, you’re asking for trouble later on down the line.

HA HA! That's great. I assume the female to male ratio is low on here?

Thanks for the info on the moonroof. I didn't know that there was already a device that pops up to reduce the wind noise. This will help in my decision in whether or not to get one. And I definitely would not have my moonroof open in the event of rain LOL. :gaygiggle

I found my car stock with no visor the little thing that is attached does not do much, it rains way to much in Vancouver so that was a bit of the decieding fact of my getting it. My sunroof is never open when it rains.

I am a female as well. There is not alot of us on here.

Welcome to the site girl. I think 249$ is too steep for a tint job but you're right. If its a perfect job who would complain right?

I personally have 20% on my car and it looks great. if you can get away with it I would do it. Goodluck on what you may choose to do.

Welcome once again.

Yup the ratio is crazy. Plus the guys (including me) jump at every opportunity they can to reply to threads started by girls. You should check out how much action there is on some of our more popular female threads like from 6spdChick, Cybergypsy, atruhondagrl and _cargirl.

Anyway, it's all harmless. If you feel harassed in any way, just let our super mod, 2fast4u2, know. She's a gal, too!

Welcome once again.

I think I might try and go for the 20%. I am going to ask around in the area and see if other ppl have gotten away with it lol. Missouri cops do not seem to be as anal as Texas ones. I rarely see cops in Missouri...they are EVERYWHERE in Texas!

Thumbs up

Welcome to the site.

In my opinion I would opt out for the visor thing. An older car of mine had it and I hated it. Alot more of a pain to clean and dry it in the tight small space. Plus the rubber part thats against the car dryed up after some years and had some nasty cracking all over it. I think it looks better without it anyways. Noise would probably be the same. There would be a difference in the air coming in. But since the sunroof will be open your going to get air in there anyways. I like the feeling of the air running throuhg my hair, LOL.
Don't let the dealer do the tint. They just want more of your money. I did my Si for $130 with lifetime warranty and with Sunguard 30% tint. It is real good tint plus dark enought since I have black interior and mainly because it is legal limit here.

Hey Melissa,
I had a moonroof visor on my 03 EX and I didn't care for it. It collected a lot of dirt and debris. I constantly had to remove it to clean the area around the moonroof. When I finally got fed up with it and removed it permanently I noticed that it left and mark in the paint that ran along the edge of the rubber that had to be polished out. It looks good but it requires alot of maintanence.
BTW, welcome to the family. I know you will love it here. You will find that we are generally more mellow than some of the other flame-fest forums out there (I'm looking at you ClubRSX). Everyone is very helpful and the mods are not Nazi's like in some other forums. We have quite a few female users if that makes you feel more comfortable. (Although you will probably still be bombarded by our male population especially since your pic is in your avatar, LOL) Anyways, have fun!

P.S. Great pics on your site. The Ripley's Aquarium looks great.

I mean dude its a civic. its a damn chick car. guess what my wife drives? 06 ex sedan whoopie. you will never see her on here. all she does is what most women do. turn car on, and drive. oil changes? ha! wash? ha! wax? hahahaha. you get the idea.

its not odd to see a girl drive a civic, its odd to see a girl who cares.

Thanks! I have decided against the moonroof visor... I think it would be a pain more than anything as u said.

Thanks for the welcome and compliments on my photos too. That was the most awesome aquarium I have ever been to.

Also, I am already enjoying it here. I have been poking around on the site almost day and night since I knew I was getting civic lol. It is sad though because last night during my whole dream I was customizing my car online...just looking at different things. HA HA! Pathetic huh? lol
