Need to knows about Carbon Hood Install?

I'm getting my ViS Oem style carbon fiber hood put on tom. and I want to know if there are any need to know kinda details about install. Like, should I attempt to remount the hood blanket and rubber seals, all or some, etc. On my old car the manufacturer stated the hood latch was heavy duty enough to not need hood pins, and I would very much like to avoid them on this car as well. If anyone has any details or answers please just let me know. ^^b

Thanks,
Eric
P.S. This is an '07 EX coupe, if it makes a difference. ^^

I would highly suggest you install hood pins for safty issues. you dont want to take the risk of having the latch on your cf hood breaking off while your driving and having it fly back breaking your windshield. then youll be out a hood and a windshield. check these aero catch hood pins out. I like them alot, doesnt have that ricey look to them and quality is pretty good. only downside is they cost a little bit more

oh and another thing they lock. so you dont have to worry about kids f**kin with your ride. also line the edges of your fenders and hood with masking tape for the install. just a precaution so you dont scratch anything up

+ 1 on Hood Pins.

When I was running my shop, we had a customer with an EG Civic that ordered one of the better hoods on the market at the time, one that the manufacturer made assurances that the latch was strong and would hold. 6 months later in the middle of summer, the latch failed and it took out the hood, the windshield and his sunroof as well as messing up his roof pretty good. (he was going about 80mph when it happened)

Not worth the risk IMHO so hood pins are a cheap insurance policy when it comes to replacing all that glass and the body work involved.

To drill the holes for the pins, put masking tape on and around the area you're going to drill and that will prevent cracking. If there are mounting rings, pre-drill those holes as well.

My buddy in his EVO has had his car going 174 MPH without hood pins and no problems. Yes he got a huge ticket shortly after and lost his license for 6 months, so believe me I am not encouraging street racing here, just talking about the durability of the stock latch.

I don't know if it is necessary or not but I sure trust JekzFab so now I may have flip flopped and will soon be getting hood pins once I order my cf hood.

Well, everyone has a story for and against hood pins. Personally - I installed them on my previous cars because I didn't want to worry about it. However, it does look less "clean" when you do that and more "performance" looking.

On the actual install itself - have help. You'll need someone to brace it and help you line it up. It isn't a hard install at all, but extra hands are needed. And save your original hood! Too many people sell them on ebay and then trade the car later with the expensive hood on it. Keep it as a back-up!

I haven't popped my hood to check to see if the OEM latch is removable but if you have the option, buy one that reuses the OEM latch versus one where the latch is "bonded" into the hood. These are a lot stronger.

I've seen both. If you are looking for a lighter hood (for racing or something), you'll find one cheaper. If you want the look but also want strength - find one with a latch. They very often are built better. It's not that the other is cheapy or anything, it is just a matter of what you are using it for. Even if you have hood-pins, the overall skeleton is different if they assume you are using a latch.

The ViS hood does have the hoop to go into the OEM latch mechanism built in. I think I want to remount the OEM rubber seals at least, but the holes are only there for the small ones at the head lights. Does anyone know a durable and high heat safe adhesive I can use to mount the other two that rest against the plastic radiator cover in the middle? And has anyone remounted their heat blanket or is that overkill?

Thanks for the info so far guys.

Eric

Yeah, a bit overkill. Frankly, the "heat" blanket is more for engine noise than anything else. It's not to say that it is worthless, but just not a big deal if you have it or not. I believe the lower end models don't have the blanket anyway (which says something).

As far as the stoppers go - I wouldn't trust an adhesive to work in an engine bay. I may be 100% wrong here, but I have never had any luck on that type of stuff. I bet someone else has ideas from their installs.

Bump. Just still wanting to see if anyone else bothered reinstalling the rubber air deflecters from the factory hood onto their carbon one. I believe those would be nearly as effective as the pins for preventing a hood popping open.
