that oval thing? nothing for a manual trans. its for autos. you put your key in there to unlock the automatic shift lock thing. think its for towing or something like that. Have to look at the manual again.

or I could say its a pre-cutout for a nos button or something :P

I read it in the manual something along the lines that if you tranny locks and u can switch the gears out like out or in to the park (ps I have auto tranny) you supposed tkae the tab out and put in your key in there and the tanny will unlock, u can read it exactly in your manual.

Hopfully u got what I was saying

It enables you to put your car into neutral if you cannot get the engine to start. It's only for autos.

^ but u dont have to have the engine on in order to shift it to neutral or out of park, u just have to have a key on, or your car is different?

yea if your auto trans wont shift into gear, you pop out the tab stick in a screwdriver to release the gear lock so the car can shift out of park

Dude that little tab itself cost 12-15 dollars to replace! Pissed me off to hear that. So don't poke it out.

automatic trans when you turn the car off the locks the shifter. if something fails or you need to tow the car or something you use that release so you dont have to have the key in the ignition.

My '89 Legend used to lock in park all the time, and I'd have to use the key to release, it actually had a key hole next to the shifter to unlock it, I'd have to put it in neutral then start it and then put in in drive, drove me nuts, but then again it had like 300k miles on it by then

Yeah, I had one of those slots (sans cover) on my 91 Accord.

I only had to stick the key in it once in 15 years though, so it wasn't too bad.

also makes it easy for repair shops to move auto transmission cars around that might have the engine in some state of disrepair.

my 98 had a keyslot there.

same concept on any new ones, pull plastic cover off, stick key in, shift car.
