Tuning a sub by ear?

Hi,

How would you go about tuning a subwoofer by ear, I don't want to buy any spl tools and such. Do you just adjust the gain an crossover until you get to something that sounds good? I used my voltmeter to give it the right amount of juice. Its rated at 1000W but 350RMS so 350RMS = 38.7volts (if i remember correctly) Its a 10" Pioneer in a 10" enclosure by bassworkx. Any tips are much appreciated

Pretty much what you said. Just mess with settings until it sounds good to you.

It's harder to tune a sub by ear, ime. But, once you know what you want to hear, it'll be easier on you.

Just use the DMM and get it to the right amount of volts at about 3/4 volume.

Remember tho, all settings (bass boost and such) should be turned down to zero. If possible, use a test tone cd to play a tone within the subs frequency. Somthing less then say 65 hertz.

After thats set, if it seems like theres too much bass then turn the gain down to match the rest of the sound stage.

Some people like more bass then others so only you know whats right.

I took this to mean he had already set the gain how he wanted, and just was asking how to tune with the x-over. In other words, asking where to set his x-over.

exactly! I have my x-over at 80hz and over on the 4 kappa's and for the sub i have it set to 80hz and under... is this a good thing? The thing is that my Z1 has the settings for the x-over and so does the amp... The amps I have are a 2 channel 1200Watt Pioneer premier series and a 4 channel 1200Watt Pioneer Premier series
