Want to Upgrade Stock Si Sub

The stock si system is nice, but lacking. I'm going to be upgrading it head unit and all speakers. I know the stock subwoofer is a shallow mount sub. I want more bass but i don't want to put a box in the car. So i wanted to know if anyone has put a regular sized subwoofer in the stock location. I think some cutting of the rear deck under the sub mount is needed so accommodate the longer sub.

What a co-inki-dink.. I'm doing some research on the same topic as well.
Assuming you're considering upgrading the power to the sub rather than the OEM amp which wouldn't push much more than the OEM sub driver.

There are quite a few threads in here on the topic, but it appears the constraints are limiting drivers to something shallow-mount in 8".. and something that will work "free-air" rather than requiring a smaller enclosure.. And the magnet can't be too wide or deep to bump into the bottom plate in the deck.

Depending on maybe fabricating a nice spacer, might be able to raise the sub a bit to give it some space but haven't seen much talk about it... One person mentioned this little dayton which looks beefy enough. Goooooood reputation with dayton drivers.. Their RS180 4ohm is a VERY good value / performance ratio mid, that I'm considering for front mids.

Parts Expressayton QT210-4 8" Quatro Subwoofer 4 Ohm

Also, one of these kicker ssmb8's was mentioned.. I wish I could find that thread now.. it's old.
Kicker SSMB8 SS Series 8" midbass speakers at Crutchfield.com

Also Hybrid Audio just came out with some 8" mid-basses that might fit the bill.

Also.. maybe something like this Peerless SLS, if it fits..
SLS 830667 Peerless 8" Paper Cone Woofer from Madisound

It's almost like rolling the dice to see if the driver can be crammed in there.

I believe i have to cut the deck under the sub to allow for a deeper mount subwoofer. The only issues is finding a good free air sub.

I found the MTX 4500 series is supposed to be a free air subwoofer. it could work nicely and its not expensive.

If you drive a coupe its the torsion bars that need to be replaced, the diy is around here somewhere to get rid of them and replace it them withgas struts.

Let me know what you try as there are a few 8" subs but a limited number for IB use specifically. And when running one IB you usually only run about half of what the rms rating is on the sub.

You have to compare their power handling, sensitivity, effective frequency range etc. kind of a pain in the ass to research this much just for an 8" sub being ran IB but I'm in the same boat and don't want a lot of weight added to my car.

If you guys are saavy, you can get a 10" sub made for IB (easier to find) or 12" IB sub (much easier to find) and make an MDF 'plate' under the deck to mount them. You'll have to do some work to seal off the baffle but it would be one heck of a setup.

I'm going IB with a IDmax 12" which I already have in a sealed box for the time being. I'm about to order a 2nd and should have them installed in a few weeks. However, this install will be facing the cabin, with baffle bolted to the location where the rear seats fold up to.

One good 12" should do the trick if you don't mind installing it like this. You'll still have plenty of space and save some weight.

so your basically doing the type of IB setup the one guy with the 2003 civic had on diy forum? That should be pretty cool, I'm assuming you are going to permamnently seal up the back seat area then so it doesnt flip down anymore?

won't have to seal it up. If you were to tear up the paneling in the back you'd see there's a good area to bolt to. It's where the seat back folds down (or in close proximity).

Now that would be a great DIY to read.. I don't know if it would work, but I've got an original version JL 10w6 hanging out that I'd love to use. Would that sub just suck or fair decent in such a setup?

From what I can google the spec's on the 10w6 (V1):
Fs 23.2
Qts .432
Qes .463
Qms 6.567
Vas 2.3 ft3
Xmax 1way .469 in
Efficiency 84.2 db (will need some bumpin' amp behind it I imagine)
Dual 6ohm
Continuous 300 watts

... alternative, I don't mind slapping it in a 1cf box in the trunk though if I gotta.. But I'm sure I'll lay it in there and see just how silly it would be to try to shoehorn it into the deck.. Not likely though.. Mounting depth is 5.5". Magnet diameter 6.5"

so you mean it would go on the seat rest area of the car when the car is stripped down? not on the trunk side of the fold where the access to the tank is but on the actual interior side of the car?

Trying to picture it, I already went to my car and after numerous tear downs here I think I know which area your talking about but I'm not 100%.

I've found this one-> JL Audio 8W1v2-4 Subwoofers
it says that its rated at 35w-150w rms, and I'm hoping to use the factory amp to power it(in another thread a guy is using factory amp to power a 4ohm 350w rms sub, and says it sounds good and is doing ok). Does anyone know what ohm sub would be better, an 8ohm or a 4ohm? Thanks.

Yeah I'd also be interested in results with these kickers.. If a couple guys went in on a pair (as you'd use one in the rear deck), it'd be cheap.
