gooseneck mounts for tweeters

hey there. ive been having a dilema, most people cant agree where to best mount tweeters for the best imaging and so forth. i came up with an idea for myself and am wondering what you guys think. i was thinkin of buyin those gooseneck swivel mounts that people use for ipods and cellphones and using them to temporarily mount my tweeters on. this way i can fiddle with them for a couple of weeks to find the best direction on which way to point the tweeters when it comes time to permanently mount them with fiberglass. i am going to mount the swivel on the little window up front. my speakers are type Rs from alpine. what do you guys think of this plan?

I have type Rs from Alpine, and here's where the guy put mine. It's perfect, and it looks really clean. It also gives me a less chance of getting my car broken into.

I installed my tweeters in the factory location, and still came in 1st place at a SQL competition.

I can see the right tweeter is actually face your ears but what about the left tweeter? Is the imaging off or is it perfect? I have the type r's as well and i can't see to find a good solution. I know right off the bat that the stock locations are terrible!

I know what you're talking about. It's not that bad. If you notice it, it'll only be at low volumes. Other than that, it sound really good and all around.

I'm with Complex. I have mine in the stock location and everything actually works pretty well.

I'm going to put them in the a-pillars within the next few months though to see how it goes.

But, factory is sufficient for most.

I've never understood why people bring their speakers up so that they're closer to their ears... The whole problem with car audio is that you're sitting off to one side of the car and now you have to try to equalize the pathlengths of your left and right stage so that they essentially "reach" you at the same time and one side isn't blasting in your ear while you can't hear the other. How can you do that when you've put the left tweeter up at the top of the door or the top of the A-Pillar, within 1-2 feet of your ear, while the one on the other side is 3-4 feet from your ear?

Newer cars are getting longer and longer dashboards so now the base of the A-Pillar is finally an option but we used to always try to put the tweeters (and mids if possible) in the kick panels as low and far away as possible from your ears in an effort to equalize the pathlengths and found you could almost get the 2 sides within a few inches of each other this way.

And before someone starts talking about digital time correction (where you delay the signal from the left speaker by a few milliseconds so they both reach you at the same time) that is all fine and dandy for the driver as long as you don't care what it sounds like from the passenger seat... try it, I did in mine and it sounded like ass!!!

I'm not worried about the passengers. My midranges are on-axis. And they're in the little window at the a-pillar. I chose this because I like to bring the sound stage up high, and am personally not a fan of kicks.... this all goes back to a system where the driver and passenger both get good sound, but driver's is sacrificed (albeit, a little), while going up top and delivering good sound to the driver.
Pretty much just comes to personal preference.

As for everything else you said, I agree. One thing to take note on (because I was going to do it) is that you can't really put the tweeters at the base of the a-pillars in our car due to the instrument panel. That panel would break up the soundstage. I did the double-sided tape method and could actually tell a difference... so could my RTA. You'd have to put them about 3" up on the pillars if that's where you're going.

One bad thing about running stock location is how much of a gap you have in the soudstage. But, with guys like Kirk Proffitt and other Stock MECA guys, it's obvious that a BAD ASS setup can be formed. After hearing that setup I'm fully confident that just about any location can be made to work as long as the tuning is on par.

And I'll agree, time correction can't remedy frequency response. However, you can use time correction to center the image to the car and not just the driver.
