True Surround Sound

What would be needed for true surround sound in the Civic Si? Ever since test driving the RDX my (stock) sound system seems so.... weak. What is needed to get a full DVD-A surround sound setup?

btw, what head units work with DVD-A surround sound, so far I've only found ones that take the 2 channel version of the sound off the DVD.

Nothing processes the true 5.1 of DVD audio but a lot do DVD video. I hope by DVDa you're talking about the high res disk much like SACD (which also isn't in cars). Sorry but surround sound for a car is utterly pointless. You can't get the imaging to be accurate so just run a good setup and be happy with the sound. Upgrade it!

That unit will still require a surround decoder.

The basic building blocks are: a media player, a surround decoder, at least 6 channels of amplification and 6 speakers (Left, Center, Right, Surround 1, Surround 2 and a subwoofer).
The left and right speakers are for on screen effects, center channel for dialogue and screen effects, surrounds for ambient effects and the sub for low frequency effects.

IMO, you're much better off setting up a good 3-way active setup up front. Like Toxis said, you're going to have a HORRIBLE time imagining rear speakers; especially since they're in the rear deck facing upward. I don't think any time alignment on this planet can remedy that.

Like both Toxis & Moxom have said, you're going to first have a dvd-audio compatible headunit (such as the Alpine iva-w200/w205, or the iva-d100). Secondly you'll have to have the pxa-h701 processor. Of course...in order to do a good 3-way setup, you'll have to have this combo too, or another like (many many many SQ competitors use an Alpine combo).

I honestly can't think of any company that would have dvd-audio + surround processor other than Alpine off the top of my head. I'm sure there are others however. I just don't know of them off the top. I would expect Eclipse or Pioneer to have that, since both have great 3-way active processor (some even in-house on single-din h/u's).

To sum it up, don't bother with it. It can be done, but it's likely more trouble than it's worth. Just get a good 3-way active setup and enjoy that.

Alpine IVA-W200 + PXA-H701.

Does DVD-A, SACD and regular DVD's all in 5.1 channel as long as you have the pxa-h701, that is connected via a control cable and an optical cable to carry the sound. FANTASTIC setup. I have been very happy with mine.

You can do 5.1 surround sound with a 2 way active front stage.

Alternately if you want to get real crazy instead of rear speakers run a 3 way active front stage along with subs in the back. That is what the setup in my previous car is.

This time around I am thinking of going simpler, but that is for another thread.
