For those not sure if they want indash or portable navi

Alpine and Eclipse have both come up with units that use portable navi attached to a double din indash unit.

The eclipse unit is paired with a portable tomtom navi that attaches to the faceplate. The unit alone only plays CD's

The alpine unit is paired with 2nd version of the blackbird (Alpine's portable navi) and slides into a slot behind the faceplate. The faceplate is a large touchscreen face that plays all types of CD's and DVD's

I hope this helps some people out. I think it is a good idea and would like to see how it ends up.

Found some more info on the Alpine Unit. It is apparently called the IVA-W205 and is $899+$499 for the blackbird. I have a feeling they will give a discount on the blackbird if you purchase the dash unit at the same time.

Yea...the blackbird is kind of nice.

If you don't get the new w205 unit from Alpine, you can buy a docking cradle ($200 or so) that allows you to connect it to another alpine in-dash unit and use that unit as the screen. Then you can still take it out of the dock and carry it with you when you're done.

It's a much better solution than the DVD-ROM hideaway unit they have which retails for $1400+.
