Question about installing speakers

I just bought a pair of front door speakers for my civic coupe. Crutchfield said I need to drill 1/8" holes in my car to mount the speakers! Is it just me or is this insane? Sorry I dont know much about car audio, but is this the norm for speaker installs to drill into the car? I figured the best bet would be to drill the holes in the speaker itself to match it up to the car but figured I would consult with the experts on here. Any help would be appreciated :)

Both are right.

You could drill holes into the speaker plate if it's wide enough.
If it's not, you'll need to drill some small holes in the car door. I did this...matter of fact, I've done this 3 seperate times. No big deal.

well they will probably have you drill holes behind the door panel, where no one will see, so I do not think this sounds odd at all. Auto manufactures have been trying to make their audio systems more and more incompatible and less standard to make it hard to not pay $1,500 for a crappy oem system and then just go to a shop and get something better for $500. Just another example

Sounds fine to me though. No if these were visible holes, that would sound nuts. And drilling holes through speakers? Usually speakers have the cone (obviously woulnd't drill through that) and then a steel rim that goes around, I don't imagine drilling through the rim would be very easy. And that probably won't work anyways.

Ok thanks ill just drill into the door. Would it be best to drill straight into the door or could I just use a self tapping screw and not have to drill at all?

Pretty much.

Though, my speakers do have a trim ring around the speaker itself with the screw holes (as most do). It's not hard to drill through that at all.

I wouldn't drill anything until you're exactly sure where you want your speaker to go.

If you're going to do an MDF spacer ring, just screw that into the door with about 6 screws. First pre-drill the holes in the MDF. Then put the ring up against the door. Mark where you will drill your holes in the door with a white-out pen, or something visible. Then drill the holes in your door. Make sure to contersink your screw holes in the MDF ring so your speaker will sit flush. After this, screw the MDF ring down.

If you do not use an MDF ring, the same logic appllies. Set your speaker to do the door, mark the holes, and drill.

Fairly straight-forward job. Just use some common sense and you'll finish in about 30 minutes.

Here i go showing off again!

Those four screws have a nut on the other side. and there are four holes for the speaker in the front of the MDF. I knew I had to drill holes once I first looked at the opening.

Yah I pulled the door apart and went to drill holes for the speaker and dang nab it if I dont need an mdf spacer myself. Oh well guess I gotta go to home depot now. Does any place sell premade spacers or do I have to custom make my own?

I was looking for some premade ones but decided against it because I already had the MDF and tools so why not make them to where i KNOW they will fit my door and speakers.

Wal-Mart. Mechanics toolset $12, Power Drill (Corded) $15, Drill bits ($4), box of assorted screws ($5).

That's what I did, just don't try to go through like heavy gauge steel and it'll hold up.
