How to upgrade 2007 Civic Sedan EX

i put 6.5" Polk db50 speakers in, which are now phased out and replaced with db51, but the front went in no problem, just drill new holes and used a mounting bracket that came from
Crutchfield. But the rear made all sorts of problems. I have an 07 lx by the way. The hole for the rear speakers is not a full circle. as you can see in this picture

This made some problems with the 6.5" speakers. There is another DIY on this forum on how to use the stock speaker incasement as a spacer for some clearence issues
This did help a lot, but i still ended up bending some metal to make it fit.
This eliminated drilling into the metal because i used the stock speaker harness thing and the stock screw that holds it in place (along with the clips)

After all that, it fitted pretty well. The next problem was putting the plastic cover on. on the bottom of the cover, there are walls (for lack of a better term) that enclose the stock speaker. look at the speaker grill in this picture and the walls that come up.

my guess is that this funnels the sound out instead of under the deck. i used a utility knife, but i bet a dremmel would work better, to shave most of the wall down.
This made more clearance and enabled me to put the deck back on.
If your looking to save your stock speakers, and make for a cleaner install, then the smaller speakers would probably be better.
but if you don't mind doing some extra modifications, 6.5" speakers will be fine.

I just bought a 2008 civic EXL and installed an MTX TC6001 monoblock amp, 1 farad Rockford Fosgate Cap powering 2 12" MTX 8000 series subs. It sounds amazing super clear highs (largely due to the stock tweeters in front) and full bass notes (pounds like crazy) I just have to deal with very slight pop at radio startup and off. I think this is due to the fact the connection is though speaker taps as opposed to RCAs. Any suggestions? Thanks guys!

The MTX TC6001 amp has the "smart engage" feature in which you can just tap the rear speakers for signal and hook up to your amp directly , no need for a LOC. I didnt even need turn on wire . The amp turns on automaticaly when it senses signal from the speakers. My instal which includes Factory head unit and 6 speakers (including 2 tweeters) , 1 farad Rockford digital capacitor, MTX TC6001 monoblock amp, 2 12" 8000 series MTX subs and iconnect 4 guage wiring has clear highs,good mids and super pounding bass. Its so much more than I expected it to be with not upgrading my HU and speakers yet.

The main diff. between the 2008 EX and LX civic is that that the EX has split fold down seats and the LX back seat folds down as 1 piece; hence there are two levers in the trunk to release the rear seat. I am still tempted to try to mount 6.5" Alpine speakers int he rear deck and to use a spacer to raise the up 1/4"

Guys, I upgraded speakers in my 07 EX sedan with 6.5" Infinity reference series (6022i) both front and rear. The trick is to 'reuse' the factory speaker frames. To do that, cut off the glued speaker membrane and use cutters to cut away the back supports. I used a Dremmel tool to smooth out all the rough edges. The use cutters to trim away the thin plastic lip at the top of the speaker frame but be sure to leave the thicker section for the mounting screw. Again, I used a dremmel to smooth over the rough edges of the plastic that I cut away. I made sure that I did not damage the foam. You will reuse the same mounting screw for the frame so there is no need to drill any new holes in the metal. Line up the new speaker over the old frame and drill little pilot holes for the new speaker. The attach the speaker with short sheet metal screws. Since the speaker is raised on the original speaker frame you can fit 6.5" speaker ever in the rear and the opening at the bottom is no longer an issue. The only thing to watch out for in speaker selection is that the mounting height is not too high and you can still snap in the factory grills over the top. This might be an issue in the doors more than with the rear deck. The Infinity speakers I chose were no problem. Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures but I saw pictures of someone doing it this way in some other Honda forums so look it up.

I put 4 of Polk's 6.5's in my sedan about 10 months ago. I went the easy route and ordered from Crutchfield - just order two of the door kits and you can bypass the whole "doesn't fit a 6.5 speaker rubbish".
Crutchfield sends the speakers with spacers, wiring harness adapters and good instructions. Trust me, the extra $10-20 you spend on speakers is worth the accessories and photo-based instructions. The 6.5 fit the rear deck fine with the adapters installed, just index the terminals to bump in the speaker hole and mount with the supplied screws. It takes some time to do it, but you don't trash the factory speakers and the install is clean.

As far as I know, only the SI's has the 5.25's in the rear to make room for the sub. You should be able to fit 6.5's with no problem.

I "under mounted" my rear speakers because the factory cut out is too small and not circular.

I didn't want to cut out the metal because the front doors were a pain, and there's even less room to work with on the rear deck unless you want to work lying down in the trunk.

Since the sedan's trunk torsional bars give more clearance than the coupe's, I had no problem with undermounting. I did it with a .75" mdf speaker ring, and my 6.5 speaker's cone has a 5.9" diameter.

The mdf did in fact kinda create a "port," at first I wondered what a 0.75" L x 5.9" D port would do to the sound, but in fact I can't tell.

I just went to custom car audio shop and they stated that they would have to build custom baffles to fit the jl ZR series 6.5 in the door. Has anyone tried to do this???

Also has anyone updated their factory radio, I have a SI coupe and I am debating on changing the speakers and head unit? As far as a dash kit goes are people using the honda navi dash kit to fit the new radio's or ordering it through Schsoce.
