Question about installing D3.

Hi everyone,

I have a bit of a concern. I was planning on paying a professional installer to do it for me ($200), but with all the help and DIY on these forums I think I can do it on my own. I have ZERO experience at this kind of stuff, but I want the satisfaction of doing this install on my own.

My question is, do you think, with my experience, I should bother doing this by myself or should I just save time and frustration and fork over some bones to get it installed professionally. I guess I'm just a little scared of permanently ruining my Civic.

THANKS

-SEBBA

As long as you have basic electrical skills and tools, you can do it.

I installed my IVA-D310 myself and I am going to install my D3 myself, too.

What tools do you have?

Also, the D3 has a separate brain right? I haven't seen pictures of any brain so just checking.

Ehh... tools. What would be "must haves?"

As for the D3, still waiting for it. Hopefully, I'll get it later this week.

I hope, I'll be able to do it by myself. I would LOVE that feeling of having accomplished it myself.

hey SEBBA your speaking the same words that i spoke one week ago. I"m now half way through my D3 install.

I have never seen the back of a car radio before this......... Only tools i have is ratchet, philips, flathead, etc.. I also bought a few crimpers and whatnot. Anyway follow the DIY to take the dash apart (very easy) and ask all the questions you want and it should be a piece of cake. Just allow yourself ALOT of time. Since its your first time you dont want to rush and you'll probably be working very slow. I took hours to do what some others would have done in 30 minutes, lol. But hey i'm learning alot, and saving myself from paying an installer 200+

Yeah, I saw your thread XM, was EXACTLY the same, heh. Yeah, I think I'll be able to do it. If I follow the dash removal DIY, that's really my hardest part I think. Do you know where you're going to mount the antenna for the GPS, and where should I mount the XM antenna?

Pulling the dash apart is the easy part, lol. Just be careful not to round the screws that you screw from under the radio by way off the pocket area.

I think i'm gonna try and mount the GPS somewhere under the dashboard, i'm not sure yet. I've heard plastic does not affect its reception. If not under the dash i'm gonna run the GPS antenna back tot he rear deck lid and mount it by the sub somewhere.

I'm not installing XM so i have no clue where i would mount that. However i think i'm gonna get XM in the future, probably at the same time that i get my steering wheel interface controls.

so you don't have tools or any sort of experience. Yup, I'd start yanking stuff apart on a $20k+ car and a new $1k toy.

Thanks for the sarcasm. First of all the car wasn't over 20,000 and the navigation wasn't 1,000; so that makes you batting .000. Nice try, seriously.

Actually, I have limited experience but it's not great. I figure if XM can do it, why can't I. I'm not going to tear the car apart, my goal is to meticulously and cautiously figure out what I have to do and accomplish it. I feel that there are plenty of resources that can help me through the install. My purpose in doing it by myself (I have the money to get it installed professionally) is to learn and acquire the skills to do this kind of thing in the future.
