Cheat code to override transponder!

A recent issue of "Wired" magazine (Aug 2006) had an article on Car Theft. It talked about the new keys with the transponders in them (like the Honda), and how they work. But it also said that some companies, like Honda in particular, had a secret bypass to the transponder in the key, that would let one start the car without using a special key, but jut a regular cut key with no electronics in it. The article said this was done by Honda so that customers that lost their keys, could call their dealer, and using a regular key and the secret code, start the car to drive it to the dealership to get the new key programmed.

The secret code per the "Wired" article, is a "series of pumps on the emergency break, interspersed with rotations on the ignition between the On and Start positions". The sequence is unique for each vehicle, and Honda has the code by VIN number. The author actually used it to start his 95 Civic. He covered his key handle in aluminum foil, and after verifying that the car would not start, used the break pumping code and got is started!

So, is this widely known? There can't be that many sequence codes for all the cars, so there must be some algorithm between the VIN and the code. Has anybody cracked this code? (besides car thieves?)

The main thrust of the article was that insurance companies were denying theft claims if the owner had all the "transponder" keys, because in their view it was "imposable" to start a car without the transponder. We all now know different.

Your thought?

I'm not sure if this is old but i've read a different article about this a while ago. They tried it on a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid but on a 95 civic, why would you even need to even pump the emergency brake since that car didn't even have a transponder? To me this is old news but some people haven't heard about it.
