Need your help choosing an Amp
I have 2 10" Pioneer Chamionship series Pro subwoofer's(TS-W2501D2)(2500 watt max./800 watt rms) in a ported box. I previously had a JL G-max 1200 watt rms Class D mono amp running both subs. It was a little under powered.
This time I am going to go for a little bigger amp(more wattage). I've been searching around on ebay an various sites looking for some good deals. Here is what i have found so far: -Power Acoustics OVN1 Mono 5500w -HIFONICS BRUTUS BXi2010D 2000W -Quantum Audio -Alpine I'm not a fan of any of these brands to be honest with you, but they are pretty cheap I've already got my Suit on...let the bashing begin.By the way, if you have any suggestions for an amp for me, please feel free to do so. Thanks in advance for all suggestions and comments in advance. Adam Last edited by adamway; 09-28-2009 at 01:52 PM. |

Of those amps you listed, none of them are going to make a ton of power at 2 ohms, but the Hifonics will more than likely make a lot more than the rest of them. The main issue is that your D2 woofers can only be wired for 2 or 0.5 ohm load, off of a single channel amplifier. If you have the electrical and sufficent box rise, the Hifonics at 0.5 ohms would get pretty loud. Honestly, for the extra few bucks, if you're looking at those amps and want to stay super-cheap, I would certainly go with the BXi-2610 (or last year's BXi-2608). Its only a few bucks more. While there are a ton of options in that price range... honestly, none of those amps are going to give you a ton of power at 2 ohms. If thats what you're going for - consider a hifonics XXV-Colossus, or a Kicker ZX-2500.1. Yeah, they cost more, but the results will far outweigh the price difference for daily use. Other option would be to run a pair of smaller amps, one on each woofer.

I am actually wiling to spend more than what those are. I was jsut looking on ebay, and was unfamiliar with these brands, so I thought I would see if they are any good. I will probably sell my 1200 JL G-max when I get it back and put that money+some extra towards a new amplifier.
HsOffRoad, What would you recommend to run these 2 subs in a ported enclouser? Are there any Amp's out there suitable to run my subs in the $1000.00 CAD range? Thanks Adam |

Adam,
In the last post, I made 2 recommendations for amplifiers that are available online for under $1000 US (not sure about CAD) that would work well for powering your woofers in a general sense - The Hifonics XXV Colossus and the Kicker ZX2500.1. If you're asking for a "general recommendation", either of those would work. I believe Jon (Mightygoose) decided to go with an XXV Colossus when he upgraded his woofer amplifier not too long ago - I'm sure he could give you some additional feedback on his experience with the unit. However, The real question is what "quality" of the substage are you looking to upgrade here? I will assume that since you are looking for "more wattage", you want it louder. While adding power certainly has the potential to generate increased output, getting "big volume" out of a stereo is very much dependent on having everything work together properly to best suit your application. Example - just tossing in a huge amplfier will do you no good if your woofer enclosure won't allow you to take advantage of the additional power, or the car's electrical system cannot support the additional current draw. In the world of performance car audio, just saying you have a "ported enclosure" doesn't mean a whole lot. Do you know the volume of the main chamber(s)? Port tuning frequency? Port area? In car rolloff curves? My point isn't to confuse you with a bunch of fancy terms, but rather to say that instead of spending your money blindly tossing more amplifier at the problem, you may be much better off backing up a step and figuring out what it is that really needs to be changed to reach your desired goal. Maybe you are just looking for more overall volume. Perhaps you want it to play louder deeper into the frequency range. Maybe you're most concerned with getting a more sonically accurate output. What I think you will find, is that its quite possible that the results you are after will require making changes to the subwoofers and/or enclosure, as opposed to just putting in a larger amp. While adding a larger amplifier(s) to your substage is never a bad idea (provided its done correctly), before charging forward in that direction, I think you could benefit from taking a step back and considering the system as a whole, and how best to reach your goals. For amps that are priced decently that are "supposed" to do rated power I hear audioque is really good and you can not argue with their prices at all.
AudioQue I can send you in the right direction to get you an RD amp for under $1,000.... there is a pre-order going on for the 3250.1 v2 ( Top quality audio equipment: Revolution Design Audio ) like that amp but better cooling for about $500 USD or so I believe, so after conversion and shipping you would be looking at like 7-900 CDN give or take on shipping and customs an all that jazz. The only thing is it is a pre-order sale (if it's still on) so the V2 amps are still being made I think the wait is a month or so IF they still have some left as they sold like 200 in a couple of days...... *Edit* I can not find the link anymore on the pre-sale but ya never know, so I can still give you the e-mail on who to talk to if interested.
