Steering wheel control question

I have been reading some threads about some people that get adapters for their steering wheel controls. Are these usually brand specific? Or if I find one that works for my head unit, does it need to be able to work with a "2006 honda civic," or would they be universal? I am looking for one for my Alpine CDA-9853.
