What is acceptable knock count?
For normal commute driving what would be an acceptable knock count?
My number 3 cylinder is running about 17 Knocks in a 30min datalog. Number 2 was just a few. 1 and 4 had no knock counts. (r18 auto) My tune so far has no cylinder trim adjustment. A/f ratio looks good. |

Good to know...
Hmph..
I was just about to ask the same question... I've done about 8 datalogs since I got the FP last week... Each time they were about 20~30 mins each.. All logs were a mix of cruising and an ocassional rip through gears 1-2-3. Each time the logs were similar. The highest count was 8, the lowest count was 5. These logs were created while using a MAF cal for three of them, and MAP for the other 5... Both produced around the same amount. All logs were recorded with the radio and HVAC controls turned off. I wanted to listen to the engine to see if I could hear anything. The funny thing is, out of all the logs I recorded, I only ever heard the knock like three times... all other times it was inaudible. So this is really nothing to worry about?? What would be considered a 'high' amount of knock?? BARRY |

When you increase the load and the knock counter begins to climb quickly like the price dial on the gas pump, then be worried. If it rips of 30-100 at a time, that is when you are in real immediate danger. The knock sensor is above the #2 cylinders, so false knock events will be more common in 2 and 3. Most of this can be attributed to inconsistant quality in gasoline. Things like detergents, winterizers, greedy gas station owners, etc. means that you can never really trust the gas from the average pump. If possible favor gas stations with individual hoses for each grade. Otherwise the first half gallon or so you get is whatever the last person bought (usually the lowest grade). I could complain about gas all day so I won't. Whatever isn't the gas, is attributed to how the sensor works. It listens for a certain frequency. If anything else happens to match that frequency and the sensor picks it up it could register as a false knock.
Point is listen for the sound of marbles in a coffee can when the engine is revving. Watch the knock counter, if it rips of a large amount of knocks at once without retarding the timing, check your tune, so you dont bend your rods. |
