They just passed a law similar to this in Texas. No part of the plate can be obscured or covered by anything, including frames and clear plastic covers. Which I think is funny because when you purchase the car from the stealership they always try to put a frame around your plate... I would fight the ticket though, the judge may just drop it if you say you will take off the plate surround.

Had the top part not blocked the State name on the plate, you'd have a case. However, it sounds by Florida's laws that he got you fair and square in accordance to the law. He must have been really bored to harass you about that though.

While I would normally be the one saying that you deserved it, I have to say that is the dumbest reason for pulling someone over ever. Pulling over for something else and giving that ticket as well, I see.

yeah its def messed up and a lame ticket, but the thing is, its illegal to cover up your plate. Although it says Florida up top of the frame... you could be a fan of the gators and have Hawaii plates as far as the cop is concerned. He was just being a deuch.

Dont feel too bad. I got a ticket for careless driving the other day after i dodged a pothole. I didnt even maneuver. I slowly dirfted to the left part of my lane. Cop said "its not my problem u lowered your car"

I think if you make it sound like this cop was following you for no reason and you felt like you were being profiled or picked on, then you might have a good case.

Questions is: why is a cop following around one person for 15 minutes waiting for them to do something wrong. Is this what we pay them for?

My thoughts exactly and I totally agree.

We all suffer from "Driving while Honda" which is a misdemeanor. "Driving while Civic" on the other hand, seems to be a Felony offense.

Appeal it. Take it off, tell the judge you took it off and that you are sorry for supporting your university and ask nicely that the ticket be waived.

My friend had teh same thing happen to him years ago when he was 17 and had an old crappy slow V6 camaro. The cop pulled him over because his plate frame was blocking a TINY bit of MASSACHUSETTS on the top of the plate. He told him to take it off or he was getting a ticket. So with no tools he snapped it off on the side of a busy road and the cop still gave him a ticket. His mother called the police station and talked to the chief, he took the ticket away since he had gotten a few complaints on the cop being an ass hole recently.

I would go to court with that same picture to show the judge and with another pic showing that you removed it. I seriously doubt that you'll have to pay anythng for it. He should just dismiss it if he has any normal sense of decency. The when you are done...go home and put it back on. The odds of getting pulled over about it again are probably slim. It's not like it's a safety hazard.

If I were a judge and I had an officer writing tickets like that .... I'd have a few words with him. Especially if that were the only reason you were pulled over. Seems like a waste of time and tax payers money for something like that. I'm sure he had no doubt in his mind that it was a Florida plate on your car.

I heard that tinted tails arent an issue in florida as long as you can clearly see the lights from 100 ft away, but that wouldnt depend also, my tinted tails are pretty good at night, when the light shines through them.

Yeah that cop needs a skull *%#). He will try to punk the wrong person one day and his cop carrer will come to a abrupt end.

We have laws like that here on tag frames and covers. But cops don't mess with it. I even changed the states standard colors on my plate letters on the civic from green to black. Never had a issue.

The wifes Accord has a chrome frame with a clear cover. The clear cover is starting to yellow a bit. I bought a new clear one and will install it this weekend. Some people will let covers fade and yellow so bad the cops can't see the tag. And I can understand why that could be a issue. A owner should address such a issue with out being told. Thus the law.
