CNN: Gas Saving Myths

Don't know if this is a repost or not, but I thought this was interesting...

Fuel saving tips that just don't work - May. 13, 2008

"#3. Use premium fuel
With prices already over $4.00 a gallon, premium gasoline is a hard sell these days. But a lot of drivers think because their owners' manual recommends premium, they'll get better fuel economy if they stick with it. Really, they're paying more money for nothing.

Even cars for which premium is recommended won't suffer with regular fuel. Modern engine technology comes to the rescue again. When sensors detect regular instead of premium fuel, the system automatically adjusts spark plug timing. The result is a slight reduction in peak horsepower - really, you'll never notice - but no reduction in fuel economy."

CNN knows what's best for your car, not the engineers that designed the damn engine.

#7 If you drive a car with Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) you must only use Half Shell V-power and half Chevron with Techron giving you VTEC gas. If you dont use this grade of gasoline your VTEC will not engage properly thus causing damge to your engine.

What a stupid article.

Made for housewives who know nothing about cars.

The one about premium gas is the most retarded. Do they really think the car company is recommending premium for no reason? Do they know what compression ratios and detonation are? Aparently not! Yes the computer can detect detonation if you throw a crappy fuel in your car, but it's still not a good idea in the long run to constantly run regular in a car not designed for it.

I think a lot of people are not completely understanding the article. The purpose is not for people who have cars which "Require" premium fuel like the si, but for people who have a car which "recommends" premium fuel or unleaded fuel. My understanding is that since their car does not require it, for daily driving purposes, it will serve no benefit to put in the premium fuel. I have seen difference in prices of 35 cents in some areas.

.35 x 14gallon tank x twice a week x 52 weeks a year = almost $510 a year

The majority of the people in this country probably do not drive a vehicle with a high compression engine. However, driving an Si, it is "Required" for me to use it, so I do. My 2 cents...

Dumb article... Many people know that because of simple economics car developers can't make cars that burn gas slower... Gas is a necessity. Whether gas is $4 or $5 people will still BUY IT. Now believe me, I am sure gas companies won't be happy if car makers started making all their cars to get 50mpg... then what happens to the gas? It goes up to like $6... There is no way around this.

Yes, I will stick to 93 Octane. Spending an additional .25 per gallon, or $4.00 (16 gallon tank in my Z), won't break the bank. If I fill up 2-3 times a month, thats only $12-$16. Yes, that is a reasonable price to pay to prevent long term engine damage.

That is not simple economics.. Sure, when demand is high and supply is low, prices are jacked up. However, if cars can get 50mpg, then demand for gas will be lower therefore law of demands says prices will be lower.

"Premium Recommended" ≠ "Premium Required"

That part of the article is not bad advice.

That and they never said a dirty air filter was "Ok." The point was swapping a clean one won't affect mileage much in modern vehicles. For us lead foot drivers it sure would make a difference because it will kill your performance.

Anyone this whole article was ripped from Consumer Reports with marginal credit given.
