I test drove an STi today...

I'm only 19 so there wasn't a chance in the world one of the salesmen would have let me test drive one. So... I went up there with my dad. Talked him into playing a "anything you want" type of scheme so the salesman would think this was a legit deal, and would therefore let me drive it.

These things are incredible! Anyone that dislikes the new design, I dare you to go take a look at one in real life. I'll be the first to say they look extremely long in pictures; thankfully that isn't so in person. They really, really do look good once you get out there.

We started out in Intelligent mode, and honestly that didn't even seem as slow as all the reviews make it out to be. Once the engine warmed up I switched it over to sport# and this thing scared the shi* out of me! I have never been in anything that fast. My dad got upset that I pushed the thing so hard, but in truth I really did not. I don't think the pedal ever got more than half way pressed down and even still, this thing flew. Scared him too.

The stick's throw was all of a centimeter in either direction. I thought I was going through another 3rd gear scenario not wanting to engage at first... lmao.

I drive an Si and it seems like anywhere I go I'm sending out an image that I want to race. I can't wait to leave that boy racer look behind for the sophisticated look the STi will put out. Someone tries to race, I shake my head no, both of us know deep inside mine will beat the living hell out of theirs. And I go on my way. I see the hatch driver as someone that buys it to use it for purposeful purposes like taking a mtn bike to the trails, snowboard up to the mtn, or fishing poles to the lake. Not racing my civic prolly makes people on the street wonder why I even own the car.

Well, there's my review turned rant. If you made it through to the bottom, thanks for giving me the time of day to read it.
-Michael

EDIT: Putting this link here again for the best looking STi I've seen.

Well dude .. I agree with a bit of what your saying ..lol. I wanted an STI before I bought my SI .. but just couldnt afford it. I love my SI but .. I still wish I would have got an older STI. The new hatch back .... I think its ugly as hell .. mind you when I first saw the 8th gen Civics I couldnt understand the styling at all either .. then over time it grew on me and bought one. But .. the older STI with a big wing on the back .. woo wee. The boy racer thing is true .. every light I come up to people look over and wanna go .. mini vans and all .. I cant stand that.

In regards to our cars being slow .. compared to an STI I wouldnt say slow but .. obviously not even in the same range. But our cars are quick ,, for the money and when you think about cars in higher price ranges .. our car is fast .. BMW 3 series .. cant compete.. Mercedes in the same class cant compete .. Maybe after driving a car like that it feels a little slow .. but when I take off from a light with mine .. the V-Tec kicks and I love it. Dont get me wrong .. if someone right now said ill trade my STI for your SI right now .. id do it in a heart beat . But .. ahh maybe one day .. until then I have learned to turn off the idiots that look down on our Civics and dont feel I have anything to prove any more.

Why would I take a picture of a stock car at a dealer? It had the bbs wheels and navigation. That's about it.

I laugh at AWD's and there 23mpg highway :P

Not knocking the STI at all, i like it, great performance for winter/rough road.

I'm honestly VERY happy with my 08 Si. I could of had an STI if wanted or something of equivalent power, but i liked how small, the si.

On a side note, now that I drive into a dealership with my si, the salesmen are more willing to let me drive high end cars, took an Z06 out for a spin this weekend

Honestly I don't have the 2F2F ricer crowd trying to race me on my Si. Maybe it's because I have a gray sedan Si; love the subtlety it gives to counteract the civic's image

I dont really get anyone to try and race me and my cars pretty modified looking on the outside (lowered, wheels, etc.)....just mustangs/trucks here and there, very rarely, but who doesnt get that.

the interior is too cheap for my liking. this coming from a civic owner from a board where everyone complains about interior quality.

also, i saw one in person, sat in it bla bla bla, still didnt like how it looked. but i didnt test drive it. im kinda scared to do that because i'll probably like it.

as always though, it cant be compared to the Si. it just cant. awd turbo vs fwd naturally aspirated. what's there to compare? 20mpg highway vs 30mpg highway. you just cant compare the two. i dont even want to list the cost difference

That's what's great about this new one. You hit the knob to send it into Intelligent (economy) mode and it cuts the power back. I remember reading about these getting 25+ highway when in Intelli mode.

Anyways, does anyone know what the insurance is like for these bad boys?
I'm nineteen and pay 400/six months for my Si if that's any starting point for you. What do you think it would run me to move up to an STi assuming I remain ticket free?

how the hell do you pay that little for ins? are you on your own policy? im 23, never had an accident (one ticket 3 years ago) and i pay a little under 1600/yr for insurance on my si. i was really really close to pulling the trigger on an sti so i got an insurance quote; 1400 for 6 months. that right there turned me off. then the lady who got me the quote was like "omg what kind of car is this?" so i told her it was a fast turbo awd car and she gave me a lecture on driving fast...

I stopped reading once it turned into a rant about the SI. You're 19 and driving an SI, be thankful for that!
