Deploying... Sell or Store

I have had my 06 si since march of 06. i am deploying to Iraq in sept. what do you guys think would be the better choice financially speaking. should i keep my car(which i love dearly) or sell it and upgrade when i get back. i have had every intention of boosting her with the redshift S/C, but an AWD monster gives me happy dreams

in short, sell now upgrade when i return or keep/store and boost when i get back? any and all experience with storing a car for a year, depreciation insight, and upgrade possibilities in (est.)sept 2009 would help alot
Thank You

prolly worth to sell it now and buy something with real power when you get back. I personally wouldn't turbo my car, factory turbo just seems so much more appealing imo.

My decision would be based on how you feel your car will be taken care of while you are gone. If you have someone who will take care of it right and wont abuse it, keep it. But if you feel your car will have 1 million miles on it when you return, sell it now.

no one in my family can drive stick, so it would have to be stored to sit still. how bad would that be for the car?

I have done it, counting this deployment, three times.
Last time was with my 03 Civic Ex. I went to get it out of storage after 12 months, fired up on the first turn. After I plugged the battery back in of course.
If you want some tips to help you store it, I can help you out.

Alright, first you want to find a good place to store it. Preferably (sp?) somewhere enclosed, but at a minimum you want overhead cover.
You also want to have a car cover, whether your car will be in an enclosed area or not, dust will still get all over it, so car cover FTW. If you are storing in a non-enclosed area, you want more than just a normal car cover. Best bet is to get the custom car cover for your car ( Car Cover Civic - $168.98 $168 ) and some large tarps. Cover the car with the cover and then wrap it with the tarp.
You want to put some air fresheners in your car, preferably something with a nuetral smell, not so much to MAKE the car smell good, but the keep your car from smelling stale.
It is a good idea to put your car on jack stands, resting on the frame, to keep the springs from settling as much. You can also remove the tires and store them somewhere they will be less likely to encounter moisture. They should be stored laying on their sides.
You should get an oil change as close as possible to the time you will store the vehicle.
When you store it, try to run it so there is very little gas, the less the better, also adding fuel stabilizer helps.
When you return to get your car out of storage, get some fresh gas, high octane, and a fresh oil change.
Disconnect the battery, and completely remove it from the car.

Thats all I can think of for now. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

+1

All the above advice is great. Definitely use some fuel stabilizer, and when you get back fill her up with a tank of premium high octane - Chevron or Shell V-Power. Last time I had to store my car it was idling really rough the first week or so, a bottle of techron concentrate helped.

I would store it just don't store it in the military car storage. I've heard horror stories. When we got back however my unit didn't have any problems so it was all hear say. I wouldn't get something with factory boost. When I leave in September I'm dropping my car off at my parents and my dad is going to have the turbo kit I have shipped to him installed and tuned for me and it'll be waiting for me when I get home ready to drive.

My land lord store his Lexus 450 for about 10 months in a civillian auto storage and had no problems at all.

Sell it, especially if you are making payments. If you are not making payments you will be sitting on depreciating goods(sell it and buy the same car when you get back for less $$$).

I would say put it in storage because you have a very nice ride. Secondly, please do not give deployment dates like that (opsec). I'm not trying to be an a@# but you know how people are always watching us.

I still think if you decide to get a different car you are going to have that negative equity and that money you put towards your ride will go to nothing in a sense. Sure you may have a new car but if you go STI or EVO you are going to be like every other deployment returner I see that buys them. I see them a lot more than I've seen SI's up here in Drum. I say be a little more original and boost. That's what I'm doing I also have an 06 si.

Just my opinion.
