Jeep?

What's so great about Jeeps?

In all honesty I don't get it. We had a Cherokee once, a POS green boxy one that always had a problem and we eventually dumped it off for my dads first Honda Pilot which he loved enough to trade in for a newer one. On the other hand a family friend has also had a line of Jeeps, all with problems, and yet he still continues to proudly buy Jeep's.

"Must be a Jeep thing"

What exactly is this "Jeep" thing? Jeep is always on the list for lowest reliability, poor customer satisfaction, etc.... So why does every other kid in CT dream of a Jeep Patriot with back sports wheels and a hairy unshaven smiley face rear wheel cover?

Jeeps seem to the the only things on the road where people openly admit to problems but still love their ride.

Probably should mention 90% of the Jeeps I see never leave pavement. Or if they do its a public park or forest where even a civic could safely go.

I guess I'm asking why the average daily driving Jane and Joe love Jeeps.

I think a wrangler would be a lot of fun to own as a second car. I like how you can strip off the top, windows, doors. They get milage as bad as my Ridgeline did though and that was BBBBBAAAADDDD lol

Having owned a wrangler and planning on getting another eventually I can tell you that there is no feeling like looking at a seemingly unpassable obstacle and overcoming it. Also as mentioned the doors and top off is pretty fun in the summer.

About the Cherokee, I think the 4.0 I6 is a hell of an engine. I know lots of people who racked up the miles with only the usual maintenance.

Hard to appreciate the angle of descent from this picture...

I have a 95 tacoma that I use as a second car, it's 4wd and runs great. Recently I've been toying w/ the idea of getting a wrangler, just something about those softtops that does it for me.

My fiancé's brother has a built for off-roading jeep wrangler. I thought the same thing as the op. But let me tell you this if you can have total disregard for your car and beat the ever loving s**t of a Jeep is great. I had a blast going off-roading with him, I mean I would never buy one but I guess I can see a part of all the hype. Plowing through trees, going through huge ruts of mud, going through rivers. Thats really what the term "Its a Jeep thing you wouldn't understand" should mean. Now the people who care to display that term on their windshield and never take it off the beaten path, They can go f**k themselves...Posers

one time a rubicon tried to race me in my RSX-S.

It was some fat guy with green windshield nozzles trying to show off to his GF.

Jeeps are just fine if they're used like they're supposed to be. Jeeps are intended to be a hardcore off-road utility vehicle. I highly doubt that any Honda "soft-roader" would hold a candle to a Jeep if it sees a high percentage of off roading.

The Jeep's gonna squeak, rattle, and groan, but it'll carry you to places that would be nearly impossible to walk to. As a daily driver or commuter car, a Jeep would be miserable... I bet the CRV would suck eggs on the Rubicon Trail too...

Cars are like tools...use the right one for the job and you'll be much happier.

As others have stated, Jeeps are great off-roading tools. Someday im going to get one as a second vehicle. I will agree with the O/P that you can do way better if you only drive them on the road.

Yeah, jeeps are fun man, you put the top down on a sunny day, blast the rock out of the speakers and just cruise! its fairly cheap convertable and now jeep offers a lifetime powertrain warranty, you cant beat that, plus the resail value is outstanding, you would think it was a honda!

wranglers are the shit

We took an old K5 Blazer, a 2002 Silverado Z71 and a 85 wrangler out to the forest once for a hunting trip.

Guess which one performed the best. The jeep can go places the trucks couldnt.

I've had a number of jeeps over the years. I think it started with the 76 CJ7 Renegade Levis Special I learned to drive in (well before I was old enough...).

Its not about comfort, amenities, gadgets, and they do squeak, groan, rattle, cough, and chew through gas like mad. I've never owned a 'new' jeep, so maybe they might be a bit better when new, but I doubt it.

Currently own two 1989 XJs:

Cherokee Laredo 4X4, I6, 5MT (AX15) - aka "The Green Monster". This is my 'beater' and hauler of things smaller than I need my F350 for. It has rusted out in some spots, leaks oil now and then (mostly in the summer), shakes in a scary way at around 50MPH (but is fine above or below ), but it just keeps going, and going, and going (270K miles on it).

Wagoneer 4X4 I6 Automatic: This is my project jeep. Lifted, wheels, tires, plates, skids. The interior has been striped of carpet and headliner then coated in truck bed liner. Two suspension buckets and an extended cage. Plus a nice 12K winch (which is not terribly useful in the desert where there is nothing to grap on to, lol). Over 200K as well. It is much cleaner and better maintained than the 'beater', but I've had this one longer and got the Cherokee in pretty bad shape to start with (it was going to be towed away when I rescued it )

Would I buy a 'new' jeep? Probably not. I'm not terribly crazy about the new jeeps. The new 4-door looks interesting, and I've seen some nice mods that would make it a passble crawler, but I'm not about to buy a brand new jeep beat the heall out of it. Maybe in 5 years or so I can find a used one, cheap, and see what they are like.

Maybe you should head over to CTJeep.org and voice your distain for them. Im sure they would be happy to tell you why people in CT love their jeeps.

Correction, you used to be able to take them off roading, till they turned into plastic, cheap pieces of crap baby movers.

Kinda like the Hummer H2 and H3, why do people buy them when they are not even close to as capable as the real thing. People just like the name.
