Yes. The original "M" was badged as the "M1". Which is this one:

Plastic body, design by Lamborghini, made to be used in GT-class races....then they were made illegal when they actually came out.

Not in the UK and Europe! There used to be 2 that I saw driving round in the south-east of England on a regular basis. It made my day every-time I saw one

Yeah, I meant in GT racing, not on the road.

No one ever said it was. It's the M1. Big difference.

It's related about as much as me to a Pterois volitans. Both have four wheels and an engine. Both me and the Pterois volitans have eyes and a mouth. Similarities end there.

It's cool, it's just funny because that question was already answered on this page, that's all.

*IF* they do make a 1-series based M car. I'd assume the nomenclature would follow the Z4's. It'd be the 1xx M or something like that. As it is, I thought BMW didn't want to make an M for the 1-series because it'd compete too closely with the M3.

the problem with an M version of the one series is that the Z4 is there and lighter. eventually the Z will get the M engine and will blow the doors off the current 3700LB M3.

if they were to make an M1 series now it would need to have significantly more than 300HP and with the weight advantage its just going to undercut the M3, and its too soon for that. by the time the M3 is ready to be dethroned, the Z will get it.

tii = 1 series M.

The M1 is the first M badged car. Technically according to the VIN, its not a BMW manufactured, but a BMW M. the E9 CSL is the first car made by the M division, but had no M badge.

the M1 did not start out as a special model of an already existing car. after the CSl and the M1, the the M division only made modifications to current cars. the second car with the M badge was the M535i which had an M division upgrades over the standard 535i. the first first Full M to be based on an existing model was the M5.

thats not how the Z is. the Z is a full M car. Z is not in the techical name. yes, people say Z4 M. but its really M Coupe and M Roadster. the Z4 M and Z3 M are full fledged M cars. the 1 series techically has enough M technic upgrades (body kit, wheels, suspension, brakes) to be called an M135i, but there is no regular 135i, so its a bit pointless. if BMW lets say made a 128i with just a 135i engine, and ALSO had the current 135i, then the upgraded one could wear the badge for distinction.

I'm curious to see if they could put the new 8cyl M3 engine in the roadster/coupe Z body. I know the engine is supposed to be very compact, but how does the engine bay of the Z stack up to the 3?

does this answer your question:
2003 Hartge Z4 5.0 - Fast Cars, Cool Cars and Hot Cars at Fast-Autos.net!
(E39 M5 engine)

also, they did it in the Z3 first.
