VTEC Controller
Do you think there will be one coming out soon, and would there be any negative effects on a R18 to lower the V-Tech kick in time from 5300rpm to lets say 4000? Is there anything like that out there. Sorry for the noob question.

Well, first...its VTEC, not vtech. Vtech is a type of phone. Sorry, really dont mean to sound like a dick...just brain washed to bring that up from the years at Honda-Tech.
Second...there will be piggy back systems that you will be able to use on the R18 eventually. Something like a product from Apex'i. They have VTEC controllers. The problem is, is that you arent going to see many gains at all on the R18. The VTEC in the R18 is for fuel efficiency, unlike on the K20Z3 or other DOHC i/VTEC systems. Lowering the VTEC "crossover" on a SOHC motor wont be noticeable. You wont get that kick like you do in the DOHC motor. Lowering the VTEC crossover on the DOHC motor is completely different. Their VTEC system work a bit differently...with the DOHC motor when VTEC engauges, the bigger lobes on the exhaust cams are activated drawing in more air into the motor. So lowering that activation will net power for them...not so much for our cars. The Hondata system for the Z3 gives 20+ hp because of this...doing so on an R18 with some other system will net maybe 3 hp. If you want to go fast, get a turbo when they come out. If you want to stay NA, it might be time to either think of a different car, or a motor swap. It will be a VERY long time until someone does some half way decent number NA on this motor...if ever. |

I took this from the hondata link I posted above, this should answer your question.
"Power is gained in the midrange from 4700rpm to 6300 rpm. Power gains above 6500 rpm are negligible, although the higher rev limit will raise average power a little." |
