Honda steam engine (really)

Alternative Energy: Honda Looks To Engine Heat For Hybrid Power

Overseas, Honda is looking at different ways to generate power for hybrid engines. The latest technique involves a Rankine cycle-co-generation unit, which can be used to produce energy from the heat produced from an engine. In tests, a Honda Stream outfitted with a Rankine unit generated three times as much electricity using the engine heat than just the regenerative braking system alone.

A Rankine unit basically turns your engine into a sustainable steam engine. The engine heats compressed water, therefore producing steam that turns a generator. See? Simple. If only the Doc and Marty had had a Rankine system in Back to the Future III...

Seems Honda is doing everything it can nowadays to try to beat around the bush.

Honda seems to have this obsession with making electric cars that burn some kind of fuel to generate electricity. Mass producing power for lots of plug in cars is more efficient than putting mini power plants into every car and SUV. Honda seems to be trying its best not to acknowledge that fact....

Actually, this isn't burning (more) fuel to create electricity. It's harnessing heat that would normally be wasted.

So more go for less gas.

Plug in electrics are fine, but honestly, without alternative methods of power generation, all that is being done in moving the pollution from the tailpipe to the power plant.

Our tailpipes produce more pollution than combined power plants.

Conversion to nuclear or all renewable sources and we have a win win situation. Of course plug ins are always limited by range but thats something the future generations will just have to adjust to. I don't see taxpayers agreeing to fork over billion for a hydrogen network any day soon.

It's only logical to want to gain some sort of benefit from the heat being lost from our engines... why not!? if they can begin mass producing something at a relatively low cost, it may become standard technology that all the major manufacturers embrace..

hey, maybe we can use this heat to power an electric motor in conjunction with my K20 and actually get some torque to my drivetrain lol

Plug in cars are a great idea, however charging time is too long and americans are too lazy for it to work.

Plus the law suits from a fraying cable

Actually thats a full electric vehicle.
Only problem with it is mostly the range.

More battery tech is coming, they are going to be cheaper, faster, and store more charge.
