If you buy them hydraulic jacks, buy quality ones.
The $15 hydraulic jack by GM (at walmart) holds up to 2.5 tons but I would say the life expectancy of it is about a year if you use it once every other week. I was under my car and the hydraulic was slowly giving out and I thought it was my imagination "mhmm does my car seem lower?" Anyhow, one bad event, the jack completely died and drop the car on me but luckily my dad was near by. Using brute strength he lifted the Si high enough where one side lifted up about 2 inches off the ground. After crawling out and a long scolding I bought some jack stands and quality equipment. Just as others say, don't crawl under your car without jack stands. Last edited by DTNguyen107; 01-31-2008 at 10:43 PM. |

I only quote them to reiterate... never get under a car supported only by a jack. Jacks are made for lifting cars, not for holding them up for long periods. Typical factor of safety is to buy a jack and stands capable of holding twice the weight of the heaviest vehicle in your garage (in my case, I have a 6 ton jack, and 4 ton stands). This way you're never worried about if it'll hold. Another big trick, is to use the central jack points to get the car up to a height to put the stands under, and use the side lift points to place the stands.... I also generally toss a tire under the lowest structural point as well just as a secondary safety. |
