VW - Turbo and Supercharger Combo - Factory Built
Autoweek reports that VW is going back in time with a Supercharger-turbocharger combo on the new engines to debut in the 06 golf, starting with 1.4L and making their way later into the 1.6 and 2.0L versions .
The 1.4-liter four cylinder that will produce 140 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, with a performance version producing 170 hp and 199 lb-ft. all from a 1.4L ENGINE! 1.6 and 2.0-liter versions of the SuperTurbo, which would produce 195 hp and 240 hp resp !!! The system, dubbed SuperTurbo Compounding by supercharger supplier Eaton, eliminates turbo lag while boosting overall power and fuel economy by 15 to 20 percent. Eaton, the apparent supplier of the supercharger for the engine, says a car fitted with the system will likely be shown at the upcoming Frankfurt show Today’s computers make the complex induction system seamless in the new application, which uses a mechanical supercharger operating at low engine speeds to increase low-end torque, and a turbocharger engaging at middling revs to provide added muscle up high. Once the turbo reaches sufficient speed to provide boost, a clutch disengages the supercharger and an induction valve closes, bypassing the supercharger. kind of like the days of the mr2's with the twin-charged engines |

And another thing, what's up with the "german engineering" scheme that VW is trying to pull? The BRAND NEW 2006 TURBOCHARGED 2.0L engine makes 200hp....wooooooooow. Your engineering is awesome! How about not....considering the k20z3 makes that n/a. VW pisses me off and my best friend owns one. The last generation VW golf had a solid rear axle!! hello 1960's. Give me a break, their new scheme should be "how to make a boring car and find a way to charge a ton of money for it". Don't even get me started on low ego emissions. [/rant] |

My girlfriend's dad has a 2001 Jetta Wolfburg edition. Lots of electrical issues.. two of them off the top of my head:
Driver's Side Heated Seat doesn't work anymore. The turn signal blinker will randomly make it's clicking noise.... you could be driving straight down the highway for 10 miles.. not move the steering wheel much, not use the signals, and it will just start clicking at you. Seems to be OK mechanically, however, and it does have a fair amount of pick up. Does anyone else find it odd that they mark their tachometer in 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, etc x 100 rpms? Why do they feel it's necessary to make the driver carry the 0 while calculating the engine speed? Easy to get used to, but just odd. My girlfriend is looking at picking up a 2001 VW Golf GL 2.0. Seems to be pretty good mechanically but there are quite a few glitches. The knob to move the power mirrors has broken off. The cup holders have broken ($125 CAD quoted for the part alone from a local VW dealer). The side mirrors have a blue tint finish that is cracking and peeling, making the mirrors unusable. Oh, and the fuel economy isn't rated very good for the car.. oh well.. |

Well, I might as well jump on the anti-VW bandwagon with a little story of my own...
A friend of mine was going back to TO from Ottawa and decided to stop in (we went to high school together, but I don't see him too often since I don't live in TO anymore). He was driving his mom's 99 Jetta... over the course of the weekend, the AC compressor broke down (making a strange gutteral sound at idle) and the passenger-side mirror broke off when his mom TOUCHED it (she didn't even put any weight on it apparently). After he left my place, I took the sea-doo out and came back to find out that he was back in my driveway with the front passenger door in pieces... turns out that the motor for the passenger-side power window failed, followed in rapid succession by the mechanical failure of the linkage from the motor to the window, causing the window to plummet into the door. We tried to temporarily rig it closed, but VW in their infinite wisdom makes their doors completely closed in with sheet metal so you can't even access the window! Needless to say, he ended up having to make the 3+ hour trip with the passenger-side window wide open ![]() It makes me wonder why in the hell he's now looking at buying a VW... I hope after that comedy of errors, he'll reconsider. J

I like how unlike the SI's where its 197 hp but 140 tourqe i think somewhere there, the VW has 197hp plus 200+ tourqe, that is going to make a huge difference. I think the 2liter SI is soon going to be wooped by a 1.4 liter VW. Now dont everyone go all crazy on me
I sitll think our car looks WAY WAY better, + turbo chrager and its all good. What going to make or break the ne SuperTurbo VW's is going to be the price, if its relativly cheap then it will be awsome, if they ovver price it which they probably will then it will be better to get an SI and turbo it.

just because it has more torque doesn't make it faster, the VW's always weigh more. They need the torque to pull their fat asses around. The new GTI *without* nav, and other options weighs 431lbs more than the si. holy fat batman. That also kills their handling abilities.
I'm sorry but the GTI is far from competeing with the Si on a track. The GTI/SI is a drivers race on the straight 1/4, but on a raceway the SI dominates. The SI smoked the GTI by 115ft - 8 car lengths in a mile and a half of twisties. VW dropped the ball on the new GTI. |

![]() My friend's mom's Jetta couldn't take a particular corner at 40 km/h without squealing all the way, whereas I regularly do it at 60 and not a peep. (Notice: I'm not a retard when I drive; I believe wholeheartedly that the difference between driving stupidly and driving aggressively is how well you know your car's limits).
