Gas conservation tips from the dealer...

This isn't anything new to most of us, but I got this e-mail from my dealer yesterday, and thought it was kind of cool of them to do:

Quote:
Dear Valued Honda Customer,

With the rising cost of fuel, it is more important than ever that we all do everything possible to conserve energy. Here at Jenkins & Wynne we are dedicated to providing you with the most modern up to date service available. To ensure you receive the best possible performance from your vehicle we are offering these helpful suggestions.

1) Avoid excessive warming up of the engine even on cold days. Thirty to forty-five seconds is sufficient.

2) Prevent stopping & restarting your motor needlessly.

3) Avoid "gunning" or "revving" the motor, particularly before turning it off.

4) Accelerate slowly from a standstill. Watch you rpm gauge, not the speedometer. An optimal rpm reading should be below 2,000rpm. This allows the motor to function at peak efficiency.

5) Maintaining a speed of 55mph or lower provides better gas efficiency. For example, 55mph will give you a 21% better mileage when compared to 65 or 70mph. Each 5mph you drive over 60 is like paying an additional 18 cents per gallon at the pump.

6) Fast rate of speed while in a low gear can consume 45% more fuel. Manual shift transmissions should be shifted into the highest gear as soon as possible and automatic transmissions should be driven in overdrive as much as possible.

7) Close windows at highway speed to prevent air drag that can reduce mpg by as much as 10%.

8) Anticipate acceleration needs ahead of time to achieve an increase in speed while maintaining as low of rpm as possible. Conversely, anticipate deceleration needs to limit unnecessary braking.

9) Select brand & octane of gasoline based on quality for greater economy. There is no benefit from using a high octane fuel unless you drive a car with a high performance engine.

10) Be careful not to rest your left foot on the brake pedal. The slightest pressure causes mechanical drag which demands greater fuel consumption & can prematurely wear down your brakes.

11) Choose routes that are shorter, straighter, smooth and with less stops. Corners, turns, curves, lane changes, slows and stops requires more gas consumption.

12) Maintaining a steady speed in cities will boost your chances of having green lights because lights are generally timed based on traffic flow.

13) Refer to your owner's manual for recommended maintenance schedules. Regular tune ups assure best economy.

14) Remove excess weight from your vehicle. An extra 100 pounds could reduce your mpg by 2%.

15) Avoid excess idling while waiting in the school pick up line, outside a store, etc.

16) Using the cruise control on the highway will help you maintain a constant speed which will save fuel consumption.

17) Attempt to combine trips as much as possible. Proper planning is key. Car pooling saves gas and defrays cost.

18) Maintaining a regular (every 3,750 to 5,000 miles) preventative maintenance program can enable you to drastically increase your mpg. During your service visits items such as tire pressure, air filters, fuel filter, suspension and chassis wear, brakes, air conditioning systems & etc., can be inspected and brought up to maximum efficiency.

19) Maintaining proper tire pressure has the potential to increase your mpg by as much as 4 to 10%. Opportunity - Gas mileage can improve 4 to 10% with proper tire inflation. Under inflated tires can lower the mpg by as much as 4% per 1 psi drop in tire pressure. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.
Too bad about windows down on the interstate...I ALWAYS drive with my windows down.

20) Whenever four or more Civics meet up on the highway, attempt to hi-jack gas tankers by any means necessary. All civic's must be black with lowering springs and neons and at least one of the drivers must be Vin Deisel.

Unless someone converted their 8th gen to a convertible, don't think our cars can slide under the truck though

#4, 5, and 7 are almost impossible for me to do... and I just realized, do we have an overdrive button?

Overdrive buttons are for those "old" automatics that only had four speeds.

I have broken about 5 of those rules posted above. Oh well, at least I don't have far to commute and after more than two months owning my new Civic it only has 740 miles on it.

Is it just me or did everyone who has a car get this letter?
I get on the road and someone created an 8th day, and let me tell you,
sunday drivers look like they are nascar drivers next to the 8th day drivers....
I think iceskates on a hot summer day could go faster than this.
I wish they would create a lane just for the 8th day driver so I/we, the ones that are smart and bought a economy minded car and not a chromed out gas station on wheels army tank, can drive normal......IMO
