Why do automatics have wider brake pedals?

Why do automatics have wider brake pedals? I've always wondered. Is it just because there is space in automatics?

my best guess would be more space and you use brakes much more in an auto than in a manual.

So you can press both feet on it in an "Oh shit!" situation. I think. Maybe.

There is no clutch pedal in an automatic, so there is much more space. They can fit a larger brake pedal, so they use one. Plus, as Rallyecivic said there would be a big gap if they didn't use a bigger pedal.

Don't you need to use the brakes more in an automatic? Like you can't really down shift to slow down.

I hate that too! We were following a Lincoln town car up a hill this past weekend and its friggin brake lights were on the entire time! It was dark so we couldn't see how old the driver was, but I'm willing to bet they were over 70...

PS: Petals are on flowers... Pedals are in cars...

AT drivers aren't coordinated enough for small pedals.

j/k, but it does make it easier to switch off to the left foot while sitting at a light

so that they can make AT haters (MT drivers) hit their face on the
steering wheel each time they want to down shift.
