Unhappy Ugh, might get a Scion Tc...Long story.

So back in July this was my situation:

No more Si, so i need advice.

Now:

I've worked up a about $2k again for a down payment. And now trouble again. The car my dad uses to commute to work is on its final days and my parents are in a big rush to get me my first new car so that my dad can drive the car i drive now, which is his truck. Well at first i was going to do it all on my own and buy myself my Si back in July, but now my parents insist on buying me a car so that my dad can use his car instead of me using it for school. Even though the money I'm slowly building up right now is for an 08 Si.

So my parents have two cars in question the Scion Tc and the Civic Si . The Si became a big fat NO after we found out it would cost 2800 extra per year on insurance. So i thought well lets get a quote for the regular civic because i would still rather have 30-40mpg than the Tc's 19-29mpg. And damn AAA says it would still be 2800 extra a year. Wow, for a civic? Well i found out that in the area i live in Honda's are the number 1 stolen vehicle. And to pour salt on wounds the AAA rep says "oh but you'll be delighted to hear that the Scion Tc would only be 1300 extra a year." So that was all my parents needed to hear. They're set. We're getting it. My second attempt out a down payment on an Si is getting owned by a Tc. I feel ungrateful that I'm complaining but i just wish they didn't feel like they had to buy me a new car when I'm completely capable to work for my own. Especially since i lost my say in what i can buy. Keep in mind I'm still going to make the payments, my parents are just helping me with the down payment by giving me $5,000. But somehow this $5,000 bought them the right to chose which car i buy...

Do you guys suggest i push to try to get other insurance quotes? Can i lie and say i live with a family member in another city?

What sucks the most is that AAA calculated the OTD price on the Scion Tc to be $20,030....You could get a Si for only a few more! I think that makes it harder to swallow. But either way i need to make the best of my situation, and if i do end up with the scion Tc, I'm not going to let my parents know i hate it. I'll pretend like i love it, for their sake because i do appreciate it, even if its not what i wanted. And next time you Si's stop next to a Tc, don't try to race it, it could be me. You'll just be rubbing it in my face haha, we both know you'll win anyway

Ive heard nothing but bad things about the Scion Tc. To be honest, its the only Scion i like.

Just keep this in mind, your the one thats going to be driving the car. My parents forced me into getting a car i didnt want, although i am greatful that i got a car, im still pist that i couldnt get the car i wanted.

If you like the Si, then go for it! Also, the 2006+ Civic isnt the most stollen car to my knowledge, its the older models. Might want to ask AAA about that.

Good luck man, i hope you end up getting a Si!

Try harder (if possible) to get the Si. You wouldn't want to be buying a brand new car that you never liked in the first place, and since you're going to be partially paying for it by yourself, buy something YOU want and not let your money go to waste on something you never wanted.

2800 a year for insurance. That's a lot just for a civic. 1400 for every 6 months that's the price of an Evo. And the evo is one of the most expensive cars to insure.

Why don't you guys try another insurance company.

AAA did a bad thing base everything from their older models. The new civics has better anti-thief system than before. Tell me how much EP3 or FG/FA have you hear that had been stolen?

Yeah, that insurance quote is straight garbage. There's no way it should cost that much at all... like Jardini said, that's Evo territory.

that was the one area i forgot to consider when getting my EX sedan as my
commuter. i worked out the lease down to zero down, just a trade-in on
an early return of the previous lease, very economical monthly rate.. i was
all set... so i thought.

then... insurance. crap. i pay only $300 for my G for 6months and i
was asked to pay nearly $400. lol. not that it's a big deal for me, but was
trying to keep the expense low.

well, it's already down 60 in one year + $25 or so dividend so not too
bad, i suppose.

You get raped if your under 25. I'm over 30 and pay 900 bucks a year for my brand new Si. Thats full coverage with good limits.

On the bright side. I saw a pretty cool looking TC yesterday. Body kit, lowered, nice wheels. Looked pretty cool. From a distance it almost looked like a real car.

The scion tc isn't a bad car at all. It looks good and performs okay, it's just not up to todays standards as far as hp is concerned in the "sport compact" market.

I would see how much you can get an ms3 or ms6 for. Also, does it have to be new? If not that opens up a whole list of decent cars that you can get for that amount of money. Hell, you can get a used porsche boxster for around $20k if you look. I've even found nsx's for that much, albeit in not so great condition, lol.

i second firmhonda-

when i was in the market, tons of great cars were under 20k, used is300, the older TL type s, late 90s boxster lol to name a few. the cars would be used, insurance would be cheaper, and you'll still be driving a quality preowned car

Damn I had a tC for my first car but i was an auto, terrible gas mileage and it rattled like crazy and had no trunk room for my golf clubs. So they decided to get my a 4 door si, cuz I needed more room. My parents like to drive spiritedly and it was only 65 more dollars a month than my tC. My insurance is like 700 bucks for 6 months. Full coverage, 50$ deductable. No accidents or tickets. Btw, I'm 17 also.

1400 a year for a teen driver. Amazing. Almost unbelieveable. Must be the state you live in. You must live out in the sticks somewhere. You'll never get a rate like that anywhere near civilization.

$2800 a year for insurance? Where the hell do you live, NY? My SI is $85 a month for insurance here in CA and I thought that was high. I use to work for an insurance co and yes, you can lie about where you live but you gotta know which area has a lower rating than yours. You can simply tell the insurance company that your parents pay for your insurance that's why the mailing address is there but the garaging address is so and so. The rate is based on your zip code, your driving experience, number of points, your car, your limits and how many miles driven per year. Tell them the car is only for pleasure use and you carpool to go to school. That should help out a lot.

Also if you are going to make the monthly payments, get the car you want because you're probably gonna be the one stuck with it for 5 years and that's a long time to drive a car you don't want. Get exactly what you want, including the color and features. $25-50 a month isn't that much. That's a few drinks at a bar in a night. Put your $2k down and skip your parent's $5k even though it would help out a lot. But would you really want to drive something you'd rather not? Just remember, that car and you will be together for at least 3 years.

By the way, a $50 deductible is good but it brings your rates up, try a $500 deductible quote. Should bring that $700 to at least $550 or less.

Be careful with geico. It's a bit of a scam. They will give you a low quote but you have to read the fine print. Most people get a low quote and dont bother to read the policy. The low quote is for very low limits on the policy. Barely enough to cover wrecking somebody elses car. I've heard of several cases where the geico insured gets into an accident and the policy isnt enough to cover all the property damage done. The is the case with most multiple car accidents. If your at fault and total somebody's 50,000.00 + bimmer or benz your in big trouble when the policy limit is only 30 grand. I know this for a fact I work for a major insurance company. You can call geico but make sure you know what your getting for you money or you may be very sorry down the road.

Check your policy limits. You may have a crap policy. I also hear that after the 1st 6 months they do an underwriting review and raise your rates. Google geico customer complaints. There are a ton of them.
