No more Si, so i need advice.

So there has been a recent death in my family and i gave up my chance at getting an Si coupe that I've been saving up for. It was my aunt who passed away leaving behind two kids and a husband who barely makes enough to survive by sweating his balls off everyday working two jobs. So i decided to give up my down payment i had saved up for a new Si. Around $7,000, to help cover the funeral costs (its so expensive to die) and help them get on their feet. It was worth it though. Anyway, the point of this is to ask your opinions on an opportunity i was given. My brother in-law has a 96 (not sure about the year) eclipse that he "grew out of" supposedly. He knew i was going to get the Si and offered this to me after giving up my down payment. It used to have a turbo and intake and other mods but its pretty much stock now since he sold all the parts. Its a fixer upper.. it needs a new transmission/clutch new tires/wheels and i might take it into a mechanic to see what else needs to be replaced. Oh and obviously it needs a paint job. But is it worth even putting money into? I don't know much about the eclipse. Or should i just save up again for the Si? The only thing I'm afraid of is if i start putting money into fixing the car, it might get way to expensive if other stuff starts breaking too. He wanted me to take it for free but i told him i would give him money for it. I'm not sure how much though. But are they even good cars or do they even have the potential to be as fast like an Si? Like i said i don't know much about these cars at all. Anyway i just wanted to see what you guys would do under my circumstances. I mean its bye bye Si for sure as of now. But thats life i guess.

P.S. keep any flaming to yourselves, losing a family member is sh*tty enough. If I've offended anyone by posting about an eclipse on 8thcivic then I'm sorry and just don't reply. Thanks in advance to those who reply with some advice. Here are the pictures:

Car doesn't look too bad. It might have potential. However it is an old car, old cars are time bombs. You will probably spend more time fixing it than you will driving it. ( I know from experience) I would save up again for the car you really want or else you will never really be satisfied. Very cool thing you did for your family. Also do you have a car now and if so, is it reliable? do you need a car? so many questions.. Good luck on what ever you decide.

sounds and looks like it will take more money to fix that up then you had as down payment for the civic SI.

My condolences on your aunt's passing. It's mighty big of you to give up the SI money to help out her family. Kudos to you.

Not sure how your bro-inlaw drove the turbo Eclipse. Sounds like lots of work needs to be done on it. Take it to a mechanic and check it out and see if it's worth your time and effort. Good luck brah.

Not worth it! Especially when it is an old eclipse, old Mitsubishi cars are definitely not reliable. You will probably end up spending more money on fixing the car.

If I were you, I would save up again for Si...

Thanks man. I'm a full time student and my families not very well off so I borrow my dad's truck that he drives to work to go to school everyday at night. Its reliable but its hard to get to work and school sometimes when you share cars. So i was hoping to get myself a car to relieve the stress of not knowing if i can get to school or work. Especially this fall I'll be taking 18 units . So i was planning to get a car by then, but my luck I'll pour money into this car and it will crash and burn. It took me really long to build up that down payment though, so if i save up again i might have to wait for the next gen of civics before i get enough money again lol. I'm not sure if i can wait that long for a car for school.

My suggestion is go out and find you something that you can buy for like 6 or 7 grand and finance that if you have to....because you'll end up putting that much, maybe a lil less, into that car after paint, tires, wheels, mechanical ect. That way you can at least buy a car that will work, you can make payments on it they won't be that big..smaller than what would have been on the SI you would've bought...then you can at least have something to get you around town until you can save up for an SI again.

take the car, don't try 2 make it fast, just keep it running good enough2 get threw school. save what u can and when u are done with school and have a real job u will be able 2 buy what ever car u want and afford parts u want for it. i bought my si with barely any money down and i'm getting cornholed because of it. i wish i had more money i'm going 2 end up refinaincing it again for another six years so it'll be like i'm just buying a used car from my self but i gota get my payments down from 520 a month. but yea dude don't bother with making it faster or shiny. i'm gussing your a young guy i was in your shoes untill i joined the AF. just wait untill u get a good reliable job

But otherwise...if you don't think that would work out for ya...or if you feel that would be too permanent to finance a car that you really dont want to keep that long, then I was also suggest just to get the "necessities" fixed on the car, might have to sacrifice painting the car or fancy rims, just something to get you by. Not like your gunna be showing the car or anything lol. But my other suggestion just depends on how much the mechanical portion of the car would cost...and how dependable you think it will hold up so you don't end up dumping more money into it a few months down the road after you initially get it going.

I agree. Just look for a car with not too many miles that you can use as a daily driver and save up money for the car that you really want in the mean time.

Just buy something old, reliable, and relatively cheap on insurance that has been well maintained. I'd say if you could find a civic, tercel, corolla, camry etc. etc. you should look into that. Those cars all seem to be bulletproof. But props to what you've done for your family. If you can't afford a car, ride a bike, use public transportation, and ask friends. I always give rides to my friends who are less fortunate.

Hope it all works out and take care.

Like all the post before me ^^

Buy it or something else thats less expensive AS A DAILY DRIVER.. and start saving again. thats all there is to it if you're determined to get the SI.

My condolences goes out to you. Karma's good, and she'll come back for ya, in a good way.

Take the Eclipse. I've known several people who have had them. One drove the piss out of it and broke a tie rod and then blew a head gasket and the head cracked or something, never got the whole story, but him and his gf beat the hell out of it to like 120k miles so I'd say it stood up well considering the drivers.

My other buddy blew the motor, again, high mileage and he drove it like a racecar when his mom wasn't lookin (was her car).

The other 2 never had problems cuz they treated the car good and did regular maintenance.

The tranny might be a bit expensive to fix (get a quote obv) but a free car is a free car. Work something out with your uncle and maybe pay him off over time rather than up front.
