Stereo Guru's Please Answer My Question

I just got done wiring my stereo in from a SI. The stereo works fine, and comes on without any problems. My question is that the sound is very faint when turned up to 40, its almost like a whisper. I don't know if there is something wrong with the stereo, or maybe it requires an amp to work. I know that the EX and SI stereos are indentical and both have amps. I'm assuming that this stereo requires an amp for it to work, but I have pratically no sound. Can anyone answer this question here. Does this SI stereo indeed need an AMP for it to work? I know the LX doesn't require an AMP to work. I have no clue with this one! Thanks for your help!

What do you mean by "I just got done wiring my stereo in from a SI?"

Did you upgrade to an SI headunit or did you install an aftermarket headunit?
Did you add speakers or using existing speakers?

If it's an aftermarket head unit maybe you're not getting enough power in which case you need an amp???

So you wired in the Si's stereo but you didn't use the amp? Did you use the Si's speakers? The Si's headunit? The speakers could be out of phase, meaning that the positive and the negative connections for one of the speakers have been reversed. I have yet to take the audio apart so I dunno if Honda marked the speakers but if not, the larger terminal is positive and the smaller is negative. If that doesn't work it could be an impedance problem, but to me, it doesn't sound like it.

sounds like he hooked the speakers up to preamps and not output.....not getting full voltage....because of no amp....

Need to use the amp, that's what it is there for.

I'm using a head unit out of an SI. I'm wiring it into my DX, the main plug is different. The LX, EX and SI unit all use a newer type plug that isn't out on the market yet in a kit. The DX uses the older type plug that all Honda radios used from 98+. I have a feeling that I need an amp for this thing to work here. Without the AMP this is is worthless I think! This is just my 2 sense.

If you are getting a whisper, that suggests bleed from the wiring but it's not properly connected. The head unit IS an amp...at least I'd assume so. I doubt they make separate preamps and amps in these stock boxes.

Regarding phase...that would affect audible performance but not volume level in the way you're describing. You wired it wrong somehow, is my guess.

If you got a DX, it's better to put an aftermarket headunit in there instead of that. I have an EX and I was glad when I took that sorry stock unit out.
