I misjudge the clutch sometimes and engage the engine with the rpm too low (500-800rpm). That results in detonation. Is it bad for the engine? What long term effect could that have on the engine? Damaged piston heads?
At what RPM do you guys usually engage the engine (1st gear). I usually engage it around 1k-1200 rpm.

1k-12k RPM is about right for 1st, even on a hill. Don't worry your not doing any harm unless your riding the clutch.
