I always get excited about pictures of future cars from the American automakers, but when they actually come out into production, I get sorely disappointed because of final fit and finish. It does look good, but I'm not going to be lining up to put my name on any waiting list any time soon.

[quote=Special Ringpop]And people wonder why Buick is sinking in the USA? Why the hell don't we get cars like this?QUOTE]
Buick is one of the hottest selling cars in China. It is also a huge status symbol over there. The big 3 actually have more chance of a rebound overseas than they do in their own backyard. Overseas the cars are known as reliable and worth the money. In Japan...they actually PREFER to have a Toyota that was imported from the states...they have signs stating made in America. Here...the general public has been known to be resistant to extreme change...we are a very conservative society. Watch a soap-opera in Australia and it is equivalent to a porno here. So...we get the conservative dumbed down version of everything. Look at the U.K. version of the civic...totally different and more edgy than what we have. If we continue to balk at dramatic change...we're always going to be behind the rest of the world. Look at cell phones...they have some rockin' celly's overseas but we don't and won't ever see them. The best I could do was buy a cool cell over in China and bring it back here. Think about it...China has almost ZERO home phones...they are a totally mobile society. It took the U.S. until last year before cell phone numbers outnumbered landlines. They aren't as resistant to change and technology as we are. Over in China...they approve (multi-million) dollar contract over a TEXT MESSAGE! Try that here in the states. That is why we always get the scraps. Last edited by xtant21; 04-12-2007 at 02:38 PM. |

Good points, all of you. I'd rep most of you, but I have to spread more around before I can.
I have noticed that the Big 3 put a lot of effort into these pre-production vehicles, and then dumb them down once they come out. The G8 had sexy wheels on it, but the production wheels will be smaller and different, for example. The G6 concept, I thought, for a sedan, was effing gorgeous. ![]() This is the production model they ultimately released: |

Did you ever see the concept for the Sunfire? They had a roadster version that was convertible but it was wedge shaped...it got wider from nose to tail and the rear fender flairs made it sexy. I thought the sunfire was ugly...but that pre-production model was pure sex. They never built it and they gave us the version we saw on the road.
Now...that said...they show us the friggin' AZTEC and that thing didn't change almost at all from concept to road...WTF?!?!! The ugliest damn vehicle (but most versatile) they showed us is the one they built as is. Who had GM, Ford and Chrysler just don't get it? Build what you show us at the auto show...and do it with quality...and we'll buy it. Don't dumb it down...jackasses. Look at reliability ratings...Honda...Toyota...top of the list year after year...where are they (mostly) built...here in the states. We can make a relialble car here...Detroit just needs to ask for a site visit of the "foreign" car makers plants. |

You are correct though...what's wrong in Detroit is money-hungry ball bags just fleecing the coffers of what was an American dominated market. Because these greedy bastards can't get enough money they've bled the big 3 dry. There really isn't anything left. Then look at who is in line next...a bunch of old guys running the show that have no initiative or vision for the future...why do you think the standard Ford front bucket seats haven't changed in over 20+ years? The seats are the same. Look at LINCOLN...the 50 thousand dollar Navigator has the same buttons and switches as the 20 thousand dollar windstar minivan (circa 2000). Who are the idiots signing off on the same old same old...year after year when the japanese and european car makers are all about advancing the automobile market? We need to fire all of the heads of the big 3 and start fresh with some young(er) faces that have a fresh look on things. They need the power to make change. There is nothing new happening in Detroit...they were even disappointed with Ford's new offerings at the New York auto show. What does it take to get through to people? You can't change the CEO and expect things to turn around. This new Ford CEO is glad-handing the public and making press releases about how he is rebuilding the dealer relationships and even "throwing in floor mats" during car deals instead of him making some ground-breaking changes at Ford itself. GET IN THE F-IN GAME PEOPLE! Trim some fat and move some fresh brains in place to have authority to make change. Don't be afraid of the investors...they are already seeing red ink...there isn't any explanation needed at this point...just CHANGE IT. This goes for all 3...not just Ford. It's sad...Honda and Toyota have more "americana" to them than the big 3...I feel like I am contributing more to america when I buy a Honda or a Toyota. Isn't that sad? I stand proud next to one of these cars...when I stand next to an american car I've owned I'm almost embarrassed...it's like...well, yeah...I know...it's an american car but it really isn't all THAT bad. (yes, it is). Last edited by xtant21; 04-12-2007 at 04:37 PM. |
