Civic vs Jetta

I am settled (almost) between a Jetta or Civic...

Civic lx vs 2.5 Jetta
Priced about the same...
Civic gets much better mileage...
Jetta has a bit bigger trunk, but everything else is about same (jetta +350lbs)

Civic Si vs Jetta 2.0 vs Jetta Gli
Jetta more money
I really like the low 1800 rpm torque peak 207lbft
Jetta 2.0t gets same mileage or so as Si
Jetta not as reliable?

Jetta 2.0 vs Gli doesn't seem to get much, or does it (18" tires vs 17", different interior, bi/xenon headlights??) what else..

Can't decide... I like the idea of the lx for the better mileage, the Si for rear disks, the 6spd and better suspension and the limited slip

Jetta, "feels" bigger... worried about reliability, the 2.0T is a better everyday engine from my test drive....

What are your ideas?

You might not like the lack of torque on the civic. I need to drive pretty hard just to keep up with traffic.

You aren't really driving hard with the Civic. It's just that your mind tells you that higher revs = more stress on engine = driving harder. The Civic Si, for example, makes power by utilizing higher RPM than torque. Go with whichever powerband you want (rev-happy vs. high-torque).

Interesting.. With all the VW reliability issues, this is a no-brainer to me.

I think the Jetta will end up in the shop a lot more. I went for the civic myself.

Also the Jetta's trunk doesn't open as wide as the Civic's

I wanted a VW for the longest but all the reliability issues I did not want to chance it. My girlfiends Jetta had 23,000 and the cat. converter went out. The honeycomb broke apart. To me that should have been replaced. VWOA told me that because it did not throw a cel it was not bad. You do the math.

That is not a valid argument. Not only its a silly issue as stuck brake light, it's on older models. Look how many TSB's 06 and 07 Civic has. ENORMOUS. Starting from rattles, ending in engine problems. My advise, if you really want people's true opinion, don't ask at Honda's or VW's forums, ask at Toyota, or Nissan.

I like my 03 GLi but the only thing I would trade it with is a FG2 or a 07 GTi.
