The wastegate should vent the exhaust gas on the hotside that it doesn't need so it doesn't overboost and spin the turbine too fast, if I remember correctly. If the BOV/BPV was doing it, then it would be unnecessary wear on the turbo.

If turbo'd cars count, then there's nothing quite like a built Evo, IMO (Skip to about 1:38):
