Paying the price for an Si.

I have roughly 340 miles on my civic sedan since my last fill and I have about a quarter of a tank left.

I think it will just retard the timing and give you a little less power

nothing would happen if he drove conservatively. fuel detonation would be slightly premature if he was VTEC'ing a bunch, but if he kept his revs under 3500RPM's then the ECU would adjust timing. however, if he uses 87 for an extended period of time his engine could go bad a whole lot quicker.

Doesn't deserve?

Anyway.. if you try to VTAK it will pre-detonate and knock.

Yeah, there's only 2 grades of fuel made, 87 and 93 (91 in most areas), anything inbetween is a mix of the two.

Running a car on reg that needs prem is not a good idea, YES the computer will sense detonation and retard the timing to prevent engine damage but that doesn't mean it's safe to run the car exclusively on it. Frequent detonation can cause damage to an engine in the long term, prematurely wearing bearings, and even bending connecting rods and damaging or cracking off piston ring lands.

He thinks he's smart now, but in 40k miles he may not be so happy.

In all but full throttle situations and below VTEC, he's actually fine. But why would anyone get an Si if they didn't want to gas it or hit vtec? If you were driving across country however, or taking a long trip where you'd be going through several tanks of gas just driving on the highway on cruise control, it'd be OK to run regular.

No he's not. If you read your manual you'd know this. Poor Si.

Why not? As long as you're gentle on the gas and don't put much of a load on the engine you can prob do it and keep the engine from pinging. I used to put reg in my turbo car when taking road trips when I was younger. As long as I didn't get into boost I was fine, if I stepped on the gas it'd ping like CRAZY though. There was really no point to even doing that as I only saved about $5 on the trips and risked spreading my engine parts out all over the highway. It's not like I was even hurting for money either, just something about paying a lot for gas that can make a person cheap.

I think YOU need to be slapped lol, what an over-reaction. My parents occasionally fill up my car if they're riding with me and I'm low. If they're paying, I just put in 87 because I'm not going to be like "uh.. well you're already paying, but could you put in premium?" Nothing has ever happened to my car. It sounds quieter and feels less powerful, but I think it's mainly just in my head. When I put 87 in, I ride it easy. In fact, 87 is probably good for me because it forces me to drive conservatively :) Nothing bad has happened to my car yet, and I doubt anything will. I can't even buy 93 around here if I wanted to..

It will retard timing to prevent knock... the guy is just not going to have as much power w/87 than w/91+

It's like putting the wrong weight motor oil in your car. Yea, it is stupid. but no, it won't cause your car to blow up.
