Hey all!
It has been forever since I have posted on here. School and work has been keeping me real busy. As some of you more senior members may or may not remember, I used to be the proud owner of a 1999 Ford Taurus SHO. Well, about a month ago I got rid of it.
But I did pick up a replacement.
Ladies and gents, I would like to introduce you to my new car.

It is a 2006 Pontiac GTO 6 speed. Black on black, stock 18" wheels. I couldn't be happier with it. The 6 speed and correct wheel drive make the driving experience almost euphoric. The engine is a 6.0L LS2 V8. 400hp and 400lb/ft in stock form. Only things I have done thus far is installed a Magnaflow cat-back and a skip-shift eliminator*. Anyways, enough chat, here are some pics of it.

Click for larger images.

* In order for GM to escape the gas guzzler tax, a solenoid is installed in the transmission that forces a 1-4 shift when certain parameters are met. This is very annoying to say the least, and downright dangerous when pulling into traffic if it catches you off-guard.

Great car!

I know there has been aftermarket stuff in the past to defeat the CAGS (computer aided gear selection). You should check into it. That feature has been criticized so much over the years and GM still puts that crap on their cars.

Took care of that about a half hour ago.

Despite the differences, the GTO is basically the poor(ish) man's Corvette.

I seriously considered a blue GTO back in the spring of '05. That was one of the few cars that just made my knees weak while going from 0-100 on a farm road. Yes, that's right. I went out to the boonies and got on it. That day, I almost bought one.

Wow that's a lot of power right off the bat! I wish Honda had something like that. But when you break down the numbers into HP per liter efficiency, if a civic had a 6.0L motor it would have about 600HP.[/babbling]
Anyway congrats on the new ride.

WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH!!!! In a manual transmission!!!! That's gotta be hellishly dangerous, I want to know how that works, so that means it'll shift to 4th for you without you even touching the clutch or the shifter? Or does it happen when you pull the shifter down from 1st and it'll go into 4th instead? That's scary, 400 ft/lbs of torque can't save you from cutting someone off inadvertantly because you didn't expect your manual transmission equipped car to shift itself.

That's a bad ass car though, I'd love to have one. I find myself watching GTO videos on streetfire all the time!

Have fun with it!

Ok, I was a bit unclear. There is a solenoid in the transmission that moves into place and blocks out second gear when certain conditions are met (engine at 165F, speed between 16-21mph, and throttle less than 25%). Basically it feels like a plate slides into place forcing the shifter into 4th. So I am in the process of shifting and instead of shifting to 2nd, I shift into 4th. The only computer intervention is moving the solenoid. The stick and clutch are still driver-operated. Before tonight when this happened and I didn't expect it, I would just double-clutch into second (releasing the clutch resets the solenoid).

Ah, I've got it, so it's not going to happen when accelerating in 1st gear and getting ready to hammer the gas pedal to the floor.

No offense to you or anyone else, but when I first saw the new GTOs I thought who in their right mind would even consider buying one of these. It's a massive engine with 70s technology pushrod system for gods sakes. Do you just buy whatever is big and fast in straght line? without thinking whether its built on sound engineering and uptodate technology? Anyone can make a big engine to produce massive amounts of horsepower, where's the challenge in that? What about intelligence, social respect for others, and environment, for technology and creative design....

Buying smart these days is a life style more than a choice.

Thank god, more people are getting smarter and more informed. Even GM finally realized this and dropped the GTO.

For one thing it is amazing bang for the buck and I personally love the styling. As for the engine, pushrod valvetrains are 70's technology, yes. But pushrod technology WORKS. Why else would GM have stuck with it for so long? It may not have variable-valve timing and OHC like other cars, but so what? This car will spank most of those "uptodate" cars out there, almost all in its immediate price range.
Is it so bad that my tastes differ from yours? You may not like to go fast in a straight line- that's your choice. It is all a matter of personal taste. Me? I like the big V8s that are quick in a straight line. Have you ever driven one? I would venture a guess that you haven't as you are probably too narrow-minded to drive a simple pushrod-powered car. I like to have fun with cars, and this car is providing me with just that. It is not a challenge to make it go fast because of its displacement...I don't see the harm in that...
I don't see where you are going with your intelligence, social respect (I have gotten nothing but comments on this car until your little rant) and environment comment.
I don't see where you get off telling me I didn't buy smart. So what if it doesn't have VTec? Big f-in deal. It is personal taste, and I'm sorry yours differs so much from mine that you had to go on a little tantrum about it. Drive one before you bash it. I'm sure you will have a few less negative things to say about it-that is, if you can force yourself to drive such a "simple" car. Go take your tirade somewhere else.
