caught woman denting friend's car

I usually park my Si on the furthest end of the parking lot so that I won't get dinged by anyone (next to all the other people with new cars). After lunch I managed to get a close spot so I decided just to take it.

While I was listening to the radio before getting out of my car, I saw a woman rummaging through her car in front of mine talking on her phone. She opened her rear door and slammed it against the car next to it, which happened to be my friend's 05 Accord coupe. She looked at the dent and rubbed it with her thumb, and looked at me sitting in my car, but then just continued with her business and went back into the building.

I got out of my car and looked at my friend's accord, and saw a significant dent (about the size of a nickel) with a paint scratch. I went and told my friend what happened and we went out to look at the damage. He was going to leave a note, but our office security wanted to call the police and file a report, since it happened on company property and they wanted an official record. I didn't know who the woman was and the company doesn't have a list of license plates so we didn't know where to find her.

A little while later a cop came by and me and my friend told him the story. He looked up the license plate and found her name. While we were doing this, the woman came back outside to her car. At first she said she didn't realize she caused a dent. I called her on this and told the cop that I saw her inspect and feel the dent before leaving. The cop told her that this was a class 1 misdemeanor, vandalism, and that she needed to at least leave a note. She told my friend she would pay for any repair costs and gave him her info, so the cop was satisfied and left without filing a report, but that he would be available as a witness if there were any problems.

I feel kind of bad for the woman, because she had a flat tire and was probably having a bad day already. On the other hand, I can imagine myself in my friend's place, if someone dented my car and then just left I would be freaking pissed. I don't think I'm going to be parking in the main lot again any time soon.

damn... why weren't you watching when someone did the same thing to my driver's side door? they attacked it with such gusto that it chipped the paint clean off the door... argh.

Glad to see you were so diligent in pursuing this woman... bad day or not, she damaged someone else's property and did the wrong thing by just leaving without so much as a note.

I allways park way out in the end of the parking lot where no one else does for this very reason. Plus the walk does me good.

I park in the back of lots too, but I still got two paint-chipping dings. people piss me off how inconsiderate they are.

that's awesome you caught her though, maybe that'll teach her to be a little more careful when whipping the door of their car open.

I, too, park way out to discourage people parking near me. Of course, there are those people who hate the fact that other people have nicer things than them. I've come out of stores before and out in the middle of the parking lot...there is my car w/ a beater next to it. No one else parked within 100 ft.

especially wal-mart!

my girlfriend used to always point out close up spots next to SUV's and crappily parked people, and I would just go park next to a curb in the back.

But she's learning, haha, now she points out the curbed spots.

Flat tire or not, thats still inconsiderate. I try to never bang someone's door. Maybe it's because I have too much respect for other people's property or my own. I just try not to do it. Dings are expensive. 'Specially on doors. I may sound like a b**ch on wheels for saying this but Oh well. Serves her right.

In a sense "justice has been served", but in all honesty, IMO, all that run-around wasn't neccessary. I mean, it was an accidental door ding, it's not like she did it on purpose or even ran into his car with her car. It appeared to be an accident, and although carelessness on her part, an accident at that. In all honesty, if any of you here have accidently hit someone elses car door with your own while opening it, how many of you have left notes with your information behind? My guess is none...

Having a bad day is no damn excuse for damaging other's property, then trying to ingnore or lie about it. I am just glad to hear you were able to call her out and she has to pay for it. I LOATH parking lot dent mongers.

Just carry 4 orange cones, and a roll of caution tape. That way you can cordon off the car every time you park. Good job catching her, can I hire you to watch my car?

I don't leave notes because I'm careful enough not to hit other people's cars.

It's not hard to control your door or park correctly in a spot.

I'm sure she just wasn't thinking, and that she flew the door open and smacked the Accord. That doesn't make it right, but I can see how it happened.

A lot of people have that mentality like, "Hm, I'll get away with it" or "No one cares about their cars, anyways", but people do, and that's a huge thing for me.

One time, I was sitting in a parking lot, and some punk ass 16 year old in mommy's 1997-2003 Grand Prix GTP coupe slammed into a shopping cart intentionally, sent it flying into the side of some poor, frail old woman's new Buick. She JUST walked in the store, and didn't see it.

I wasn't sure it caused damage at first, but when he laughed about it, I called the cops. They came, bagged his sorry ass, and I went in and got the woman.

She started crying because she was so happy someone was considerate enough to that, and she'd have been devistated if she saw that, because she worked really hard at her part-time job making money for her new car. That poor woman...

^^ Yes, that is unfortunate for that poor lady , but in all fairness, it is a completely different situation. The woman who dinged the door on the Accord wasn't calous, as it appears to be an accident. Accidents happen and nobody is perfect.
