I wonder what this will weigh.

Also, I think that it's awesome that GM is pricing the SS at $30k.. Even though the G8 GT will probably perform very similarly for the exact same price, this actually carries a name that demands attention. If GM keeps going at this rate they will dominate the performance race (for a while). You have the G8 GT and Camaro SS that, if the Camaro lives up to the G8 GT and GTO, handle great while still offering up fantastic straight-line performance.. The Cobalt SS/TC that crushes all the competition in its price range (and above), the Corvette Z06 which has been outperformed by the GT-R.. as long as you never launch it or try to obtain the numbers advertised by nissan..

Hopefully people will start to see why I've been sticking up for GM. This is what they've been working towards for a while, and they've been improving reliability along the way. I'm not a fanboy, I've just been trying to get people to realize this.

Best handling FWD car to ever lap the 'ring, as well as beating out every car in its class (as well many in the class above) somehow just equates to a torque-steering cavalier?

The v6 manual is right at 3750 it looks like... a loaded ss/auto is pushing 2 tons. The price, power, and looks are great, but the damn thing weighs an absurd amount. I'll pass, and I was looking forward to this a good bit.

To be fair, the VDC/tranny defect only w/ the GT-R comes into play with launches, and only very few have complained of it so far, so it's far from conclusive. So performance-wise it'll still handily beat the Z06.

Even though the Camaro is heavy, it handles pretty well. I mean the SS is quick enough to beat the Porsche Cayman on the ring. That's nutty.

On a turn course, stock for stock, yes. It'd be interesting to see both cars with some good track tires. Those Goodyear run-flats are not what you want on a track at all. Straight line speed, the GTR doesn't keep up. Even with launch control, the Z06 pulls away.

I wasn't meaning to compare the overall performance of the Z06 with the overall performance of the GT-R, I was just saying that at this point I'd rather have a Z06 simply because you can actually see those advertised numbers without voiding a warranty. To me what Nissan has done is nothing short of false advertising, and no one should ever have to pay out of pocket to see the numbers that they claim (race compound tires, $20,000 transmission ,etc).

Trust me, this is coming from someone that loves Nissan and absolutely hates the looks of the Corvette.. I think the rear of it looks like the designers just ran out of ideas and said "Screw it, just chop it off here and throw some taillights on it."

Both cars have been run with good track tires. The Nissan stock is also Bridgestone runflats, so don't see how tires would change anything.

But you're jumping to rather far-reaching conclusions from what is so far a very isolated incident, which is my point.

You're right, that's my bad.

I can't wait to see how the Camaro does around the track, as well as 1/4 mile times. This will really be the decider on if it makes an impact or not. I mean, if it does well then why in the world would anyone even consider paying $10,000 more for an Evo? Because the Evo is a sedan? *cough* G8 GT *cough*

I think that it's great that companies are coming out with bargains like this, it really gets the whole fanaticism behind the Evo and STi in check. BMW, GM, Mazda, Nissan (if they really do drop the price of the 370z when it's released), etc.

I still personally like the looks of the Challenger a whole hell of a lot more, but an SS for $30k?! That's win..

I guess I made a bit of an assumption there, that the stock GTR tires are better performing than the Z06's. I've just read too many harsh criticisms of the Goodyear run-flats as a performance tire.

only meant to be a half joke, seriously, if the base camaro is as good as it sounds, the ppl who buy the ss/tc over it should be shot in the face.

Dodge should rethink the 40k pricetag on the srt-8.

More or less off topic, but Speed:Sport:Life Avoidable Contact #17: Cheating Nissan, Bitter Porsche. (no relation) is a pretty solid explanation of why all claims from manufacturers regarding lap times really need to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

You know, the Cobalt SS T/C may be faster than the LS on the track, who knows.
