Remember, (it sounds counter intuitive) but in a corner you actually want to be on the throttle because acceleration will transfer the weight to the rear of the vehicle - in which case the handling becomes more nuetral. If you are braking mid corner and complaining about understeer then try what I describe above. |

why FWD is better all around....
FWD cars pull rather than push meaning no fishtailing (which is worse then oversteer, etc., when trying to control a car with considerable HP) unlike civics which arent a concern anyhow unless you smack another 100 ponies under the hoods. For winter this applies as well and pull through snow making traction even that much better the RWD models. I think it also means less efforts for HP to get you goin too? |

Drivetrain loss in AWD is because they are pushing power through all wheels, therefore to get the wheels turning, more loss is unescapable. However, considering that you have traction and power in all FOUR wheels, they generally launch better and retain grip better in corners. They just have a tendency to understeer, which is usually fixed by over-throttling at the apex. Slow in, slingshot out.
And, no, FWD in *any* case is better than RWD in racing weather.

gladly, i drive my dads 400hp ZR-1 all the time. best handling car i personally have ever been in. RWD handle better and have more handling potential than any fwd car could ever dream to whether it is front ,mid, or even rear engine.
It's common fuggin sense bro. do some research. and as for your comment on cornering control.....as soon as you break traction in a fwd car....guess what......NO STEERING!!! When you break the rears loose on a RWD car in a corner......you use the throttle to correct it. thanks and have a great day. |

I'll have to disagree myself. FWD is also preventative of that particular situation. Then again, yes, corrections will probably be easier made in RWD, since grip is easily found in the RWD because the driving tires aren't also trying to course-correct.
I'm waaaaaaaaaay more confident up in the mountains in my Civic than I was riding in an S2k. :)

i see what your saying.....i wouldnt say rwd is better in a slippery situation but it can be controled better? see what im saying? i guess im tired
id like to stay off the winter season comments....lets keep it on the track. we all know rwd is not fun in icy situations. lets keep it to performance reasons. |

If you're talking track -- yes, I completely agree. There's no way two similar engines with one being RWD and one being FWD could even compete at the same track. They could, but once you get to tighter and faster turns, FWD should - in essence - be left behind by their inherent power/grip factors.

I love FWD for anything but trying to "show off" Then again I haven't been really interested in showing off since I was in high school so FWD is good for me. I'll add something else. The 06 Si is the best handling USDM FWD car from the factory ever. Yep I said it. I have pushed every car I have ever driven to the limit and in factory trim the Si blows everthing else out of the water. It doesn't have killer understeer and even on the factory tires it sticks to the road like nothing i've seen before. Just my .02
