any math geniuses?

okay so anyone figured out...

how many gallons does each light on the fuel - dash- light represent? cuz i remember i had three left one night and i refueled.. and i only used 10 gallons! that means i had three gallons left. yet... each light CANT represent three, since there are more than thirteen lights... anyone?

ps. i kno that the lights are exact, just wonderin tho, a mathematical estimate.

Well, if there are 20 bars on the gas meter, and the tank has a 13.1 gallon capacity, thats approx. 0.655 gallons per bar.

The tank is 13 gallons. The rest you put it was probably made up from the rest of the fuel system. Many cars can pack a gallon or two more than they are rated.

that theory only works if the cross sectional volume of the tank is the same throughout the tank, i know you said approx .655 but it could range from .3 at the top of the tank per square to a gallon per square at the bottom or the other way around

I see your point, depending on what your gas meter reads could depend on what the gallons/bar equation is. I'm just using this formula:

13.1 gallons
----------- = 0.655 gallons per bar
20 bars

or 0.655 gallons per bar X 20 bars = 13.1 gallons

It does not actually measure out to an exact science. I can get 60 milles on my car before 1 bar leaves, then the second bar leaves 15 miles later. Then When I got down to 2 bars, it went to one, then back up to 2. So It is not exact, just more of an approximation.

i dink its because their is a reserve tank in production cars dat
only is used when the main one is empty so dat 14.4 gal w/e
is probly correct

yea, im coming from an old accord which didnt have a working gas gauge so i just go to about 390 miles and fill up and ignore the gas gauge alltogether unless the reserve light comes on

if we could get dimensions of the tank and the fuel level sensor we could calculate out a more precise relation per box to amount of gas left. but thats just the engineering student in me thinking and talking

The bars are definitely not "linear".

However I do find that the gauge is pretty accurate at the 1/4 1/2 and 3/4 points.

thanks guys! i was just trying to figure out my new Si. ofcourse i know that the boxes arent linear, i also discovered that if you are idleing, the gas shows a little less by one box. then when i kick it in and start driving, that extra box magically appears! i dunno if its just coincidence for me tho that it comes back when i drive.

its just hard to tell on these digital readers how much you are diong in reality. same with the speedo, i sorta wish that the refresh rate on those things were a bit more responsive in terms of speed. but that is for another thread! if any works out this gas stuff, please post!

Same here, i've gone about 200 miles and it showed that the tank was half empty. I got about 320 with a couple bars left, so its not exact at all
