What a crappy vid, I just watched it. As Janizary said, it sounds good, but if you think about it, it's all a load of BS.
12% is the avg interest collection!? I get 3% in a safe one right now, 12% would be quite risky me thinks. Not only that, but how the hell did they get $5.5 million if you put away a car payment every month for 40 years? I wasn't paying much attention until I heard that. Just doing the math, 40 years x $475 car payment is like a 1/4 of a million. Are we back to this insane interest rate again? And finally.. where are they finding all these cool, awesome cars for 6k, 11k, etc? You can't blame people for wanting to drive a car that isn't a POS all the time. And a car doesn't lose a 1/4 of its value the 2nd you drive it off the lot... unless it's a Dodge. |

while you can get som great used cars, it's hit and miss unless you know the history of the car and how it was cared for and driven.
As mentioned, starting new, you know how the car is looked after from Day 1. If you buy Honda or Toyota etc. depreciation is minimal. If I was buying American wheels, then I would consider buying a 1 or 2 year old model as they tend to depreciate the greatest in the first couple of years. |

I think it's nice to start with a new car. You know it, it's yours and yours alone. But that nice video makes a lot of good points.
I'm definitely going to try to keep my SI as long as possible. that's why I'm starting new. My first car was a 96 accord- it's still going strong. First car my dad ever bought new. Never had a break down- perfectly maintained. Biggest issues were a broken muffler and a broken window motor. Now my sister's driving it, and it's still doing fine. 150k on it. buy new- that way you can keep it maintained properly. But buy a good 15 year car, not a 5 year car. |

New or used I only purchase good deals.
My Civic was purchased new. I looked for used or CPO and they were as high or higher than what I could pay brand new. Even a year later the Civics on the used market are still demand a high value. I will hand wash and hand wax my car, log in all maintance records, and will ask a high fair resale value when I private sell the car. I also like a new Honda with the extra warrenty. Buying used without a warrenty can be risky and a hassle. Just one major visit to the stealership could offset the money saved buying used. In the past I've bought used. CPO (cert preowned) 55k Benz ML430 with 9k miles on it for 22k. Drove it for a few years and sold it for a decent price. A used 2003 Jetta TDI drove it for three years. Tires worn out and still got near what I paid for it. Recently bought a 2006 Mini Cooper S loaded with all options and a near 10k invoice in Dinan and JCW upgrades. For less than book value. The key is to only purchase good deals. Then sell private party and attempt to sell at a good price. |

I think I'm done with buying new cars, I donno though. I've just had horrible luck with them and can't justify paying monthly payments on cars that still have problems and that I have to worry about where I park and that I have to take great care of.
I had a new 05 Ford taurus and it was flawless except for a water leak that the dealer could not get fixed. So I traded that on a new 07 Si and made more trips to the dealer in 15k miles for mechanical problems than I made with the Taurus. Now I've got a used 04 Taurus that I got in near showroom condition with 14k miles on it. Much better deal if you ask me since someone else already took the depreciation hit and even if it has some problems at least I'm not making huge payments on it. I've already put 12k miles on it and have not had to do any repairs, so I couldn't really be happier unless it was paid off. If I could have it my way I'd sell my current car and drive a $4000 older turbo volvo or something. No car payments, cheap insurance = more savings for me. |
