VW GTI?
If you can find a Mazda Speed3, thats another..

Hrm, ya know come to think of it, there really isn't many hatch backs anymore.
That fall in the sporty category, at least.

my mom is thinking of leasing something that gets better mileage than the pilot driven by my sister with a lead foot.
She's thinking about an R18 sedan, I keep telling her to go fit.
There is both a versa and a speed 3 on her list? quite the spectrum.. or were you just naming hatches lol

I'd go for a Toyota Matrix.

You can get them in AWD if you need that, but seeing as you're in AL, you probably don't. My wife has the AWD one, and she gets 28 mpg in the city, so the base model should get even better mpg. They also have the Matrix XRS (FWD) which has a little more power over the base model too.

neither of those get what I would consider good mileage.

it might be worth noting that the Vibe and Matrix are the same exact car

how much does she want to spend? VW has some nice hatches. If it's around town and you want cheap, get a fit, versa or the toyota one. (I rented the toyota one and it's fun to drive even if it feels kind of cheap (it is cheap ~15k).)

the fit gets really good mileage around town supposedly, like 33. what about a prius? that's basically a hatch.

I say matrix. The new ones are hot. Especially with the TRD 19's and AWD

well the civic coupe is almost as good as a hatch. If you fold the rear seat(s) down you can haul a ton of stuff.

You also don't get all the rattles associated with a hatch.

but ...sigh....if she has to have a hatch, then Mazda 3 or the new Saturn Astra is nice.

also whoever said the new Matrix, I disagree. The new ones look like a clamshell. The windows are so far in compared to how the doors bulge out. It looks weird.
